Johann (John)Sontheim aka: Southern, Sotherin, Southein- enlisted Sept. 19, 1864 at St. Paul Minnesota. Served till the end of the war. John emigrated from Germany in 1853 and was a locksmith and farmer by trade. The Sontheim family settled in Carver County by 1856. He died in 1886 and is buried at St. Josephs Catholic cemetery in Waconia, Minnesota. John Sontheim is my great-great grandfather.

Charles Arthur Jones is my 2nd Great Grandfather. Born January 16, 1846, Portland, Maine. Father Richmond Jones Jr., Mother Achsa P. Gammon. He was 19 years old on enlistment date of January 31, 1865, Walcott Township, Rice County, Minnesota. The first Minnesota Heavy Artillery was organized by Col. William Colville and contained 1,800 men. This regiment was mustered out April 26, 1865, to Fort Oglethorpe, near Chattanooga, TN, and waited there in the Spring and early summer of 1865 to be called into action, but the call never came and in August, 1865, the regiment was ordered home. Peter Shaleen - Sergeant

Born Peter Månsson, Gårdsby parish, Kronoberg, Sweden in 1833 and educated in Sweden as a scholar and organist, he emigrated with his family to Chisago County in 1855, where he taught school and was organist of the Swedish Lutheran Church at Chisago Lake until his death in 1898. He took the name Sjölin in Sweden, changing it to Shaleen in America.
