Marcus Morton Thompson - Private
Marcus Thompson wrote an incredible letter to his brother-in-law Orin Amsden from Ft. Pike in November, 1862, describing the voyage from Boston to New Orleans, the Battle of New Orleans, the occupation of New Orleans and some about daily life there.

He joined up with his brother-in-law Ellis Amsden, and Ellis' son Jacob Estan Amsden, and describes their health in the letter.

Marcus and Ellis were both dead of disease by fall, 1863. Jacob Estan Amsden re-enlisted, was wounded in the Battle of Yellow Bayou, and died of his wounds in June, 1864.

caleb franklin tufts - Private
I am writing a book about Caleb who was also in the 27th Mass Infantry and was captured at Drewey's Bluff on May 16, 1864 and spent the next seven months in Confederate Prisons finally exchanged on Dec 16, 1864. Caleb was my great uncle. His brother William was in the 20th, the Harvard Regiment and my great grandfather, Caleb's brother George was in the 27th. My great grandfather, William Newman, was also in the 27th and died in New Berne, NC on May 17, 1862 of typhoid. There was also two Tufts cousins in the Union army, one from Vt. and one from NH. All the Tufts men survived the war. Caleb's father, also Caleb, was the 12th child of Zachariah Tufts who was called Morgan Tufts as he was a member of Col Morgan's riflemen who stopped the British cold at Saratoga and completely defeated Col. Tarlton at Cowpens. he also served in Col. Starks NH regiment, in the 11th Virginia regiment and in a NY light infantry unit. His service record indicates that he served 7 1/2 years in the Revolutionary War.
