Company G
Matthew Alexander - Private
Born in Cecil County, MD in 1836, Matthew enlisted with his younger brother Nathan Alexander & a cousin, George J. Benjamin on Aug. 21, 1862 at Camp Moffatt, Baltimore, MD. He was captured at Winchester VA on June 15, 1863 & confined at City Point, Va where he was paroled July 23, 1863. With a good service record & apparently no reason, in July of 1864, he deserted his post & didn't return until Sept. of 1864. He faced a General Court Marshall & was confined to hard labor at Fort McHenry, MD, without pay, until the end of his enlistment expired. Due to his excellent conduct & the fact that he had a wife & 3 small children at home, his sentence was voided & he returned to his company. He mustered out near Washington, DC on June 20, 1865. He later moved to Norristown, Montgomery Co., PA where he became involved with the local G.A.R. He died there in 1925. My 2nd cousin 4x removed
