Jean Baptiste Pierre-Auguste - Private |
Not a relative, I simply honor his service. Jean Baptiste was a 'free-person of color'. Enlisted in early 1862. The 29th saw extensive service in the Vicksburg campaign. particularly the Battle of Chickasaw Bluffs, December 28-29, 1862. The Twenty-ninth Louisiana was part of the Confederate garrison inside the besieged city between May 19, and July 4,1863. Jean was slightly wounded while serving in the trenches. He was paroled home following Vicksburg's fall. The unit was exchanged and returned to duty in the summer of 1864. During Feb-Mar,1865 he was detailed as cook for the company's officers. He was still present when the regiment disbanded in May,1865. He received a Confederate pension in 1915.
