Alex was born in 1820 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. He had served in the Mexican War, a member of Rapides Volunteers. Married Martha Elizabeth Flint. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 and died in 1863 in south Louisiana. An account of his death by Captain Stafford was that they were 'reconnoitering with a squadron of his regiment when he was shot and died of the effects of his wound. The bullet had struck his watch and driven the works of it into his body. Within a few hours he was dead.'
