James Alexander McWaters

Alex was born in 1820 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. He had served in the Mexican War, a member of Rapides Volunteers. Married Martha Elizabeth Flint. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 and died in 1863 in south Louisiana. An account of his death by Captain Stafford was that they were 'reconnoitering with a squadron of his regiment when he was shot and died of the effects of his wound. The bullet had struck his watch and driven the works of it into his body. Within a few hours he was dead.'

My paternal GGGrandfather, James M. Thompson, served as Capt of the St. Landry Parish Independant Rangers (Thompson's Partisan Rangers) until incorporation into 2nd LA Cavalry Regt.in 1862, eventually serving as Commander of Co.A. He promotion to Major in early 1863 followed the death of Lt. Col James McWaters. He eventually resigned his command in late 1963 and transfered into the 2nd LA Reserve Corps in 1964 at the rank of Colonel. He was paroled in June 1865 from Washington, LA. Col. Thompson entered Confederate service at the age of 43, having been born at sea in 1818 as his parents were immigrating from Scotland.

William is believed to have been born in South Carolina, but some say Ala. He enlists for the war at Natchitoches on 14 May 1863 enlisted by Capt. Blair. He has two cards in his archival file. His first engagement was at Bracher City on 23 June 1863, Red River Campaign March - June 1864. Henderson Hill 21 March 1864 where his units' flag was captured by the enemy. Battle at Mansfield 8 April 1864, He died 8 June 1908 and is buried at Bethlehem Cem. Haughton, Bossier Parish, La. beside his wife. We are related by marriage.

Robert has only two card in his file. He enlisted 1 March 1863 in Co. B 2nd Louisiana Cavalry. He was 16 years old. He is the husband of my 2nd cousin x 4 Sarah H Chapman d/o Stephen Decatur Chapman and Caroline E. Jackson. He is buried at Plesant Hill north, Sabine Parish Lousiana. Sad to say, no stone could be found for him or his wife.

Waddy was born 5 Jan 1823 in Greenville District, South Carolina. In 1860 appears on the 1860 census as 37 y/o living in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He has 2 cards in his archival file neither of which gives his enlistment date. He did serve until the end of the war. His unit surrendered at New Orleans and was pardoned near Natchitoches. It is believed he served during the Red River Campaign. The 2nd La. Cavalry was formed thru consolidation near Donaldsonville, La. 1 Sept. 1862. was also known as the 3rd Partisan Rangers. He married in 1864 Mary Anne Barbara Curry. They are buried at Springfield Cem. Coushatta, Red River Parish, La. He is the father-in-law of my cousin.
