While on campaign in Tennessee he contracted neuralgia. He was confined to his barracks in Covington for treatment, but was never cured. This condition bothered him enough that he was not able to work as a blacksmith any longer. He applied for a pension, but it was not granted.

On 11/30/1864 he mustered into 'E' Co. KY 55th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 9/19/1865 at Louisville, KY My wife's ancestor, also served in Co. D 37th Ky Inf. with his brother-in-law, John Barnett

James L. Bethurum was my great-grandfather. He was from the Mt. Vernon area of Rockcastle County, Ky. James was born abt1847 and died 19 Nov 1878. His headstone should be somewhere on the family property at the time. I have yet been unable to locate the site of his burial.

My assumptions: My great grandfather was evidently captured on the retreat from Knoxville on December 4, 1863. He was probably held as a Union POW in Kentucky. He took the 'oath of allegeance to the Union' and was allowed to join the Union army.

Any information You may have on my uncle would be greatly appreciated. i have several of his muster records, newspaper clipping, notes and other information about other people he served with. if I can be of assistance to anyone, i will be setting up a web site shortly. I will post the site here as soon as it is ready for visitors.

Andrew's brothers and father also served the 24th and 53rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry units in the Civil War.
