Lawson felt the call to serve in the Civil War and in 1863 enlisted for 3 years in Company K, 14th regiment, Kansas Volunteers with the Union Army out of Leavenworth, Kansas along with his brother Elijah Tipton. There he joined the Kansas Calvary at age of 28 serving until the end of the war.

Promoted to Corporal from Private Dec 15th 1863 to Jan 1865, Then to Seargent. charged $8 for 1-Merrills Carbine. Paid for 70 miles of travel

Mustered Out 06-25-1865 at Ft Smith, Arkansas

Rec's pensions of $15 in 1907, $20 in 1908, $27 in 1912
