Lawson felt the call to serve in the Civil War and in 1863 enlisted for 3 years in Company K, 14th regiment, Kansas Volunteers with the Union Army out of Leavenworth, Kansas along with his brother Elijah Tipton. There he joined the Kansas Calvary at age of 28 serving until the end of the war.
