Valentine Harlan was a Private in Company B, 6th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted in July 1861 and re-enlisted January 26, 1864. He was discharged July 21, 1865 in Louisville, KY.
He died on August 9, 1922 in Osceola, Iowa.

Simeon Blake James - Private
|
Simeon was my G-G-Grandfather and he served in the 6th IA Infantry Company D from 1861-65, and was wounded at the Battle of Griswoldville in 1864. He also participated in Sermons March to the sea from Georgia all the way to the Carolinas, it said in the family that he carried the flag, but have not found evidence to back it up.

Washington Galland - Captain
|
Capt. Washington Galland, born 20 July 1827 Yellow Banks (Nauvoo), Warren County, Illinois. Son of Dr. Isaac Galland who built the first school house in Iowa. His younger sister Eleanor, is known as the first white child born in the Iowa Territory. On May 16, 1861, at age 34, Washington was commissioned Capt. Captured at Shilo 6 April 1862. He was moved around to several different Confederate prisons. November 1862, moved to Richmond area where he was paroled in a prisoner exchange. Moved to a hospital in Washington and released to go home to Nauvoo, Illinois. Did not return to duty and resigned his commission. Became a very successful attorney in the Keokuk, Iowa / Nauvoo, Illinois area. Died in Summerville, Iowa 22 April 1915. Buried in Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa, plot # 879.

Newby Chase - 1st Lieutenant
|
Newby CHASE was my Great Uncle through my Mother. He enlisted with the 6th Iowa Infantry in 1861 having travelled from Southern Ireland at the young age of 20 and enlisted. He was eventually killed at the Battle of Big Shanty in 1864 and is buried at MArietta National Cemetery. He was survived only by his 3 siblings and his Mother and Father.

Theodore M. Schreiner - Sergeant
|
Theo Schreiner from Mt. Pleasant, IA at age eighteen enlisted as a sergeant on 7/12/1861. He was mustered into Co. K, 6th Iowa on 7/18/1861. Theo was captured on April 6, 1862 at Shiloh and imprisoned at Camp Oglethorpe outside of Macon, GA. Theo died as a POW on 8/23/1862. His remains were later moved to the National Cemetery at Andersonville, GA and placed in grave #12995.
