Enlisted at Terre Haute as a Substitute Volunteer for one year for Daniel Hepler Jr. on February 7, 1865. Pvt. Blacketer, age 19, had been a farmer in Warren Twp., Putnam Co, Indiana prior to his enlistment. He was mustered out on May 8, 1865 in Indianapolois. His Muster and Descriptive Roll of Detachment of Drafted Men and Substitutes forwarded* form reports his name was not taken up on Company Muster Rolls of Regiment. He served at Camp Morton, an Indianapolis training camp and federal prision for captured Confederate soldiers.

George William Hancock - Private
George William Hancock was born on 3 JAN 1833 at Worcester County, MD. He enlisted as a private in Captain Townsend's Company, Co. 'C' of the 53rd Indiana Infantry, organized at Grandview, IN in February, 1862 and served in that capacity for seven months. The unit first guarded prisoners at Indianapolis, then was ordered to Savannah, Tennessee. It was attached to the 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, Army of Tennessee. The Unit then advanced on Corinth, Mississippi and laid siege to that important rail junction between April 29 and May 30, 1862. The 53rd then marched on through Tennessee to Memphis via Grand Junction, where Private Hancock became seriously ill in June, 1862 and was honorably discharged. Returned to his home in Indiana. He died on 22 MAR 1877 at his home in Spencer County IN. He married Julia Sargent of Ohio who was eight years his junior. They had eleven children. He was described as 5'10' tall, dark hair, hazel eyes and a fair complexion.

He took part in Sherman's 'March to the Sea' but due to illness was transported from Savanah to the hospital at Davids Island New York from which he was later discharged. He was left with lung troubles the rest of his life and died in 1879. He is buried in Horners Chapel Cemetery near Fredericksburg, IN.

Married Susan Angelina Bates on 11 November, 1846 in Spencer County, Indiana. Susan was born 17 August, 1828 in Harrison County, Indiana, the daughter of Lewis Bates and Elizabeth Veatch. She died 10 January, 1864 in Boonville, Warrick, Indiana.

Joined the 53rd Indiana Infantry on 10 October, 1861.

Wounded at the Battle of Hatchie River 5 October, 1862.

Resigned his commission 14 July, 1864 due to surgeons certificate.

Moved to South Union, Kentucky in 1865 with four of his five children and became Shakers.

Moved to Grenada, Mississippi in 1872.

Died in Grenada, Mississippi on 15 January, 1884. His body was shipped back to Boonville, Warrick, Indiana and was buried next to his wife, Susan, at the Old Boonville Cemetery on First Street in Boonville, Indiana
