Simpson S. Scott served as a private in the Forty-Third Regiment, company B, of Indiana Volunteers. The Forty-Third Infantry's company muster roll shows Simpson enlisted in the army on 16 September 1861 at Terre Haute, Indiana for a period of three years. He is listed as being 18 years of age. He re-enlisted 1 February 1864 at Little Rock, Arkansas. Simpson was discharged two months after his re-enlistment in 1864 due to death caused from wounds received while engaged with the enemy at Marks' Mills, Arkansas, April 25, 1864. Simpson is buried at the National Cemetery at Little Rock, Arkansas. The entry reads: Died 4/28/1864 43 Ind Inf, Original burial at Marks Mills, Arkansas Plot 2481. His name in this record is incorrectly stated as Scott, S.L.

Was living in Kahoka, Clark County, Missouri with many other family members. Enlisted 3 Sep 1861 in Co E, 43rd Regiment Indiana Infantry. Captured April 1864 and sent to Camp Ford, Tyler, Texas for 10 months. After being release returned to Eaton, Preble County, Ohio and there died of pneumonia. Joseph was unmarried.
