Alvin Peterson Hovey, original Colonel of the 24th until promoted after the Battle of Shiloh. Served with the Army of the Tennessee during the Vicksburg Campaign, notably involved at Champions Hill where the 12th Div., XIII Corps which he led received almost 1/3 of the casualties which the Union side suffered.
He is my great-great-great grandfather through his son, Charles J. Hovey, Mary Hovey Brinkman, Charlotte Brinkman(Behrick)Weedon,& John C. Behrick, my father.

My great, great grandfather, John J. Kenley, inlisted in the Indiana 24th infantry in July 1861 and was mustered out in Galveston, Texas in November 1865. He fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and numerous other battles. He was slightly wounded on the hand at Shiloh, but lived on until age 96 in Wabash, Indiana, where he was the last living member of the local GAR.

George enlisted in the 24th Indiana with Colonel A.P. Hovey. He entered as a pvt,
then promoted to Corporal, and a short time later became a duty sergeant. The regiment was ordered to St. Louis to join Fremont then to West Missouri. He was again promoted to orderly sergeant then retuned to Jefferson City,Missouri. The
regiment took boats to the Tennessee River where they participated in battles at Ft. Henry, Ft. Donelson, and Shiloh under Lew Wallace. George was promoted to sergeant major. They then moved to Memphis, arriving in time for the naval engagement. They remained in command of the city for a week. They moved to White River and then to Helena, He was promoted to Capt. and assigned to recruit
for the first colored regiment 1st Arkansas.

David known as Davy Duke from Lawrence county Indiana enlisted on 31 July 1861.

Enlistment 9 July 1861 at Paoli, Indiana by Capt. Dill for a term of 3 years. Mustered out 30 July 1864 Baton Rough, La. Alfred is buried at Marengo Cemetery, Marengo, Indiana and I am the great great grandson of Alfred.

W.T. Spicely was born in or near Chapel Hill, NC, but his family moved to Orleans, IN (on the southern edge of the state) when he was young. Apparently, this area of southern Indiana attracted a great many settlers from the Carolinas, which made choosing allegiances during the Civil War a very serious local matter.

Spicely served with Zachary Taylor in the Mexican War (1846-47), where he saw action at the Battle of Buena Vista. In this battle, Taylor''s army of 5,000 men defeated General Santa Anna''s 14,000 troops in a pass near the city of Veracruz. He mustered out of that war as a captain, and returned home to Orleans, where he was a well-respected local businessman.

When the Civil War broke out, Capt. Spicely was one of a small group that took the initiative to organize the men of Orange County into the 24th Indiana. This was, apparently one of the first regiments formed in Indiana -- not surprising, since they lived right on the Mason-Dixon line, and were thus facing the immediate threat of Southern incursions.

The 24th, with Spicely as one of its colonels, moved down the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans through the course of the war. Along the way, they saw action at Shiloh and Champion''s Hill/Vickburg. At Vickburg, they apparently played a critical role in opening the city to Grant''s troops. Spicely himself recieved a serious leg wound at Champion''s Hill, which did not deter him from continuing to fight. He received a special commendation for his bravery in this battle.

The week Lincoln was killed, the 24th participated in the conquest of the port at Mobile, AL -- one of the last actions of the war -- and were sent home soon after. Spicely mustered out as a Brevet Brigadier General.

He lived out the rest of his live in Orleans, where he was regarded as a local war hero. After the war -- now in his late 40s -- he married Maria Overton. They had two sons, Albert and Chester. Albert never married, but Chester had a son, Earl Chester, and a daughter, Dorothy Ida Marie. Dorothy was my maternal grandmother.

William had 4 brothers: Dixon,youngest, Nathaniel, oldest, Robert, and John...Nathaniel died of his wounds from Stone River, Robert was shot in the leg could never walk again and Dixon??? I am Dixon''s great great grandson!

Julius joined the Union army as part of of Company F, 24th Indiana Infantry in 1861, shortly after he came to Evansville from Germany. He served in many of the western campaigns, and was with General Grant at the capture of Vicksburg. Unlike many soldiers, he didn't see the war as horrible, but referred to it as the 'greatest adventure of his life.' He had several narrow escapes from death during the war, including facing death by starvation and exposure in a camp in Missouri, and the collapse of a rail bridge in Indiana, in which many others were killed. After the War, he worked as a farmer and a carpenter. He was a member of Farragut Post No. 27, G.A.R., and according to his obituary 'old soldiers knew him, as did scores of others interested in hearing stories about the Civil War.' He was survived by two sons and two daughters.
