John conley was a texan by birth who was orphaned as a youth and moved to ohio. Eventually, he ended up in Logansport, Indiana as a farm hand at the outbreak of the war. He enlisted in the 3yr regiment. He would ironically face his brother inlaw and his 24th Texas cav. at Kelly's field at Chicamauga. He was discharged along with the remainder of the regimen when they returned from texas as occupying forces.
