Enlisted as a private in Co. H 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, War of the Rebellion, on 6 July 1861. He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer on 1 January 1864 in Co. H 21st Reg. Indiana Volunteers. He held the rank of private and corporal and survived the war, and was honorably discharged at Baton Rouge Louisiana on 10 January 1866 as a corporal.

Married Margaret Jane Bradley 6 Mar 1864. Had 9 children: Adda, Lawrence L, Margaret, John Adam, Charles F, William, Hester, Emil and Everett.
Died of Uremic Poisoning, aged 78 yrs, 3 mos, 11 dys. Buried with wife in Odd Fellows Cemetery (aka IOOF), Tipton, Moniteau Co. MO.

[2 x great granduncle] Enlisted 3 Oct 1864 at Indianapolis, IN and mustered into Battery L, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery (also known as the 21st Indiana Infantry). Joined his unit in the field on 22 Oct 1864. Severely injured while hauling a load of wood when the mule upon which he was riding slipped and fell upon him, thereby breaking his leg. Sent to St. Louis General Hospital at New Orleans, where he remained from Feb to Apr 1865. Furloughed for 60 days on 20 Apr 1865 and returned to Indiana to convalesce. He remained absent with leave in Indiana until he was mustered out on 12 Aug 1865, due to the end of his term of service.
