Hello. Documents have shown that this soldier was a recruit that went in on Oct 31, 1862 and then deserted on July 8, 1864. It looks to me that the 18th was back in Indiana at this time for a furlough (from early June to mid-July). I can only assume that as a farmer he felt it best he stay home. Unfortunately I haven't found any information regarding his being reprimanded, but his obituary from 1900 states that he was a veteran. I don't know if anything was worked out or if he was pardoned, but I have found that his wife did receive apply for a pension from the military after his death. I have not been able to find any photographs of him.
