Owen Todd, Jr. served in the Civil War enlisting as a private at Shabbona Grove on Nov. 2, 1861 for 3 years in Capt. Kittle's Company 'C', 58th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. On Aug. 18, he was attached to Battery 26, Company 'H', 1st Regiment Missouri Volunteer Light Artillery. Owen, Jr. served under Gen. Sherman during his infamous march to the sea and saw action during the battles of Ft. Donelson, Advance on Corinth, Town Creek, 22nd July, Siege of Atlanta, and Capture of Savannah. On July 28, 1863 near Corinth, MS., Owen was captured by guerrillas and imprisoned by the confederate forces at Belle Isle, Richmond, Va. being paroled March 16, 1864. When captured, Owen weighed 140 lbs but was reduced to a sickly 92 lbs at his release. Pvt. Owen Todd was honorably discharged Dec. 29, 1864 at Savannah, Ga. from Battery 26, Company H, 1st Missouri Light Artillery. He was mustered out at Chicago on Feb. 7, 1865 being described as 30 years old, 5' 6', light complexion with blue eyes and sandy hair, occupation: farmer. Owen, Jr. was given a $12/month pension starting Aug. 27, 1888 for rheumatism and total deafness of the left ear.
