He was wounded in the right arm on September 20, 1863 during the Battle of Chickamauga. He survived and was able to retreat with the rest of the Union Army to Chattanooga. He was discharged from the Army due to his injury.

Enlisted at Aurora, IL 23 Sep 1861. Participated in the following civil war battles: Pea Ridge, Arkansas; Murfreesboro (Stones River), Tennessee: and Rasaca (Adairville) Georgia. He was captured once and wounded twice. Discharged at Springfield, IL 6 Oct 1864. Came to Missouri soon after his term of service and lived in Osage and Gasconade counties where he farmed and raised a large family. He lived to age 94.

Lavern Stanton - Corporal |
Lavern Stanton, was mustered into Co. H., 36th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on Sept. 23, 1861. He re-enlisted as a Veteran after his 3 years service was up in 1864, and was mustered out as a Corporal on Oct. 8, 1865. Company H was raised from men in McHenry County, Illinois, where Stanton lived.
The 36th Illinois Regt. saw much hard fighting during the Civil War, participating in the battles of Pea Ridge, Perryville, Stone's River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and in Sherman's march through Georgia, fighting in the Battles of Resaca, Atlanta, Kennesaw Mountain, and the Battles of Franklin, Tennessee and Nashville. The Regiment lost 11 Officers & 193 enlisted men killed in action or died of wounds, and 1 Officer and 127 men died of disease, for a total of 332 fatalities.
