Charles N. Hubbel - 1st Sergeant |
Charles Hubbel (1839-1865)had been born and raised in Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois, but by 1860 he was living in Springfield where he held a postal job. In January, 1862, the 1st Illinois Cavalry was being reorganized following it''s capture at Lexington, Mo. the previous September. It was at this time, on New Year''s Day, that Charles enlisted into Co. F.
For the next 7 months most of the Regiment served in Missouri. However, in July a mutiny of sorts began over the appointment of officers and this brought about an order from the War Department for the unit''s disbandment. On 14 July 1862 the 1st Illinois Cavalry was mustered out ''because it''s services were no longer required''.
Charles reenlisted elsewhere, but to date we haven''t found out where. All that is known, according to family papers, is that he died in Texas in 1865 while ''still in the service of the Union Army''.
