William enlisted in Dawson County, Georgia in July of 1864. He was 18 years old and had just marries Martha Caroline Goss. His cavalry unit number around 500 men. Most of whom were sick or wounded at home from front line Georgia regiments. Their duties were to protect the local citizens of the North Georgia mountains and maintain law and order. They also arrested deserters and forwarded them to their regiments. In January of 1865 Gen. William T. Wofford was ordered to North Georgia to take command of all Confederate and State troops in the area.They performed noble duties while under Wofford and were surrendered in Kingston,Georgia in May of 1865. There they were given rations by Federal General Judah due to their horrible condition.
