John Lynch Martin, Jr. - Captain |
Born Laurens County, GA in 1840, family owned Modena Plantation, Savannah. Originally a member of Oglethorpe Light Infantry and was seriously wounded at 1st Manassas and given medical discharge. He went home to Savannah and recovered and in 1863 organized a cavalry company in GA and rode to Virginia. Became 8th GA CAV. Took part in Wade Hampton Cattle Raid, Battle of Reames Station and many other actions. Was part of Pres. Davis' escort to Georgia. Married Eliz Wright, dau. of John B. Wright of Wrightsville. Founded UCV Camp Martin #964 in Johnson County, GA and was Asst Adjutant General of Georgia Division UCV. Lived at Buckeye Plantation in Wrightsville. Wrightsville was founded by his father-in-law Sen. John B. Wright. Died in Wrightsville and is buried there. Also had cotton brokerage business and town residence in Savannah. His father was from Cavan County Ireland and very prosperous planter.
