Henry A. Chapman, Civil War veteran, who filed for an invalid
Pension in Maryland for his service in Co. H, 5th Connecticut Infantry; he
filed application 1193603 in Maryland in 1897; his widow, Sarah A. Chapman,
filed for a widow's benefit, in July 1906, in Maryland,
application 852340.
Civil War History of Disability dated 2/10/1904 has Co. H, 5th Connecticut Infantry; I incurred on or about July 1865 near Lookout Mountain under the following circumstances to wit: I was sick just before the battle of Lookout Mountain, was left behind by my regiment at the time. I was sick in the Hospital with attacks of rheumatism. Sometimes I would get better and then the attacks would get worse. Prior to the battle of Lookout Mountain. I had been detailed as a pioneer with Gen. Sherman, with whom I went helping to build roads and bridges through damp swamps and marshes of Georgia, South Carolina and other such places invaded at that time by Gen Sherman. I was continually subjected to work in water in about such damp places, the result of which was that I was thrown into the hospital with rheumatism as above stated. After coming out of the hospital I again joined my regiment after the battle of Lookout Mountain. I have been treated, on and off for rheumatism form that time to the present.

Phineas hailed from Griswold (CT), enlisted on 7/14/61, and was with the 5th at the battle of Ball''s Bluff. From April through June 1862 his unit was part of the Department of the Shenandoah (Banks), and spent a lot of time chasing/being chased by Jackson. The 5th apparently had some poor morale problems at this point, and Phineas was no exception. On June 15th, 1862, he was tried by a regimental Court-Martial. The charge was ''Absence without Leave'' and he was fined $13.00. It appears from his service record that he was temporarily detached to Battery F, 4th US Artillery (which was at Gettysburg), and subsequently the 20th CT. He was mustered out on 7/19/65 at Alexandria. If you have or are looking for any information on the 5th CT, feel free to contact me by email.
