Robert Bell (my ggg) was from Arkansas and fought for both sides. First with The 18th and 26th Arkansas, then joined his brother with the 28th Wisconsin in 1864. Discharged in Brownsville, TX in 1865.

Benjamin was 28 years old when he enlisted on 3 May 1862 at Monticello, Drew County Ark. This was 50 miles from his home. Enlisting in Co B 26th Ark. Inf , Captain Gibson's Company. He served until the end of the war. He applied for a pension from Tecumseh, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma in July of 1915 but died soon after on 12 Nov. 1915. We are distantly related by marriage.

Calvin was born 8 Feb 1823 in Montgomery County North Carolina. He was abt 38 y/o and living in Lacy, Bearhouse Twp, Drew Co. Arkansas when he was enlisted by Sam Gipson as 3rd Lieut. Morgans Battalion of Infantry. He was later promoted to Jr 2nd Lieut. In Sept he is absent from his unit and detailed to find clothing for the regiment. He has 8 cards in his archival file. Battles Prairie Grove Ark., Devil's Backbone, Ark., Red River Campaign, Louisiana, Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas. He died 11 Dec 1866 probably from the hardships of the war. He is buried near his home in the Jordan Cem. Bearhouse Twp. Drew Co. Arkansas. May God rest his soul.

Killed in Feb. 1864 at Manatee in Tennesee. Born in 1836 in Wilcox County, Alabama.

On 12 May 1862, James enlisted with Capt. Halliday's Co. D, 26th Inf. at Centreville, Bradley Co. AR. In April of 1863, the company - renamed Co. I of C.D. Morgan's Battalion, 26th AR Infantry - moved to Camp Anderson near Little Rock AR where James died. He is buried near the camp. Leonard, as he was called, was the son Joel Ashcraft and Martha 'Patsey' Ferguson, and the husband of Catherine F. Crook.

On 12 May 1862, James enlisted with Capt. Halliday's Co. D, 26th Inf. at Centreville, Bradley Co. AR. In October of 1863 he had been home to see about making provisions for his family and, according to his widow's pension application, was rumored killed by federal soldiers. His widow was Sarah Jane Byrd; her claim was rejected by reason of 'No proof of husband's death.'

James Leon was the son of Jesse Ashcraft and Sarah McClellan.

Jonathan, son of Joel Ashcraft and Martha 'Patsey' Ferguson enlisted 12 May 1862 at Centrville AR. He was wounded 7 Dec 1862 at Prarie Grove AR. On 29 Mar 1864 he was taken prisoner at Longview, Ashley Co. AR. He was imprisoned at Rock Island IL until 17 Jan 1865 when he was taken to New Orleans LA. On 4 Mar 1865, he was part of an exchange for Union prisoners at Red River Landing LA near the end of the war.

Records show Thomas enlisted 12 May 1862 as a 5th Sergeant at Centreville AR, but was reduced to ranks. He took the Oath of Allegience at Pine Bluff and was the son of Joel Ashcraft and Martha 'Patsey' Ferguson.

William enlisted 12 May 1862 at Centreville, Bradley Co. AR as a 2nd Lt. He was reduced to ranks 12 Aug 1862. He later took the Oath of Allegiance at Pine Bluff AR giving his home as Bradley (now Cleveland) Co. AR, Hurricane Twp. near Mt. Elba. He gave his birth date as 4 Sept 1828. William was born in York Co. SC, son of Joel Ashcraft and Martha 'Patsey' Ferguson.

He was originally from Leipzig, Germany and had been a mountain man/fur trapper in the Rockies. Settled in AR after marriage. He often used the German form of his name, Gruen.

John was a volunteer in the 26th Arkansas Infantry during the War Between the States. He enlisted on May 12, 1862, joining Company D in Centreville, AR. He was detached to duty with Hart's Arkansas Battery from 19 June-12 July, 1862. He was captured at Longview Arkansas on 29 March, 1864 in operations against Steele's attack towards Shreveport. He was sent to Rock Island, Illinois POW camp and exchanged at Red River Landing, Louisiana on 4 March, 1865.

George was born in Morven, Anson Co. NC in 1830. He married Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Daniel in 1857. In 1860 he is living in Veasey Twp, Drew Co. Arkansas and is 30 y/o on 1869 census. He enlisted 3 May 1862 as 1st corporal in Capt. Gipson's Co Ark Vol. This became Co B 26th Regiment Ark. Infantry. It is 50 miles to rendezvous. aka Morgans Battalion. 6 Aug 1862 he is the acting company Ordnance Sgt. 15 Aug 1862 he is promoted to Jr. 2nd Lieut. and moved to Co D. He has 24 cards in his archival file. At this time I do not know the circumstances of his death as it is given as 1864 in Arkansas. His wife filed for a pension in 1915 from her home in Monticello, Drew Co. Ark., which was granted. I Have ordered a copy of that pension. I suspect he died in one of the following battles and is buried in an unknown location. Red River Campaign in Ark - La. March to May of 1864, Pleasant Hill, La. 9 Apr 1864, or the battle of Jenkins Ferry 30 Apr 1864. We are related by marriage.

William Floyd Meeks enlisted in what eventually became Company E, 26th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA, on May 12, 1862, in Selma, Drew County, Arkansas. He went in with the rank of 3rd Sgt and came out with the rank of 2nd Lt. He was born ca 1835 in Franklin County, Georgia (now Banks County). In 1847, the family migrated westward. With various “crop stops” along the way, they eventually made it to Drew County by 1860. He married after the war to Emmaline Amelia Cook Ussury and began farming in Desha County. W.F. died in 1918 at the home of his daughter in Arkansas City. He is interred in Scott Cemetery, Desha County, Arkansas.

Leonard Westerman was born Sep 1839 in Perry County, Tennessee, the son of John and Malinda Westerman. He served in Desha County Battalion, Arkansas militia during the Civil War.

Leonard also served as a private in Company E. 26th Arkansas Infantry during the civil war at Selma, Arkansas, May 12, 1862; present through February 29, 1864. (Tombstone inscription indicates he served in Company B)

26th Infantry Regiment [also called 3rd Trans-Mississippi Regiment] was organized during the summer of 1862 with men from the northwestern section of the state. This unit served in McRae's, Cabell's, L. C. Gause's, and Roane's Brigade. It skirmished in the Indian Territory, saw action at Devil's Backbone, and later participated in the fight at Jenkins' Ferry. The regiment was included in the surrender on June 2, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Iverson L. Brooks, A. G. Greenwood, Asa S. Morgan, F. P. Yell; Lieutenant Colonels James P. Stanley and John C. Wright; and Major Samuel Gibson.

Following the Civil War Leonard Westerman travelled with his family to Texas where he married Nancy Rovenia Adkinson on 30 Nov 1872 in Kaufman County, Texas. By 1888 the family had settled near Iredll, Bosque County, Texas where they remained until their deaths.

Isaac and his three brothers all joined the 26th Infantry CSA at Lewisville, AR in May 1862. He participated in the battles of Devil's Backbone, Prairie Grove and Jenkins Ferry. He was captured and was exchanged as a POW at Ft. Smith AR. He died in Saltillo, Hopkins County, TX in 1899.

William Daniel PARLER, born Sep 04, 1828 in South Carolina, died 1865 in Columbia County, Arkansas. He served in Company G, 26 Arkansas Infantry. He enlisted in Lewisville Arkansas for 3 years on May 22, 1892 in Capt Hamiter's Company G. A note from his daughter Laura Catherine PARLER, born Dec 06, 1855 in South Carolina, died 18 May 1946. 'There were so many anxious days and long nights before it [the War] was all over. One day we looked out and there was father, tattered and worn, coming across the yard. He was walking and had been on foot for days. He told us that the war was over, that he had come home bringing nothing but a pair of gold rim eyeglasses which he had found. In two years time, our hearts were broken again, for father died of a congestive chill. Then came unthinkable sadness, for we were left without a thing'. One day as my mother[Amarintha Snider-Parler] lay upon her bed, she raised up on her pillow and saw through a crack of the door a man approaching her house. Immediately she recognized him. 'It's brother William', she sighed with relief. And it was, for when Deacon Jacob Snider had learned of Daniel's death, he had sent William to bring Amarintha and the children home. William J. Snider, his sister and her children made the trip back to S.C. by wagon, boat and at Memphis they boarded the 'cars'.
Amarintha returned to South Carolina from Arkansas in 1869 with her brother, William Snider. After Amarintha died, her father, Deacon Jacob Snider, took her children [Laura and Alex]in and raised them.'

Franklin was born 1834 in South Carolina and moved to Arkansas. In 1860 he was a 26 year old farmer with a wife and three young children ages 1,4,and 6. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Colman . He lived in Union, Pulaski County Arkansas. His parents were William Little Covington and Cecilia Stewart. He enlisted for three years at Pine Bluff, Arkansas on 20 July 1862. At this time we know very little of his war time experiences.

Thomas has seven cards in his archival file. He was about 28 years old when he joined Morgan's Regiment Arkansas Infantry on 20 July 1862 at Pine Bluff Ark., for 3 years or the war. This became Co K 26th Ark. Infantry. Thomas developed a right hip inflamation that led to a medical - Surgeons Certicate for discharge. He was honorably discharged on 12 Sept. 1862.
