Singleton Posey - Private |
Singleton Posey joined Company 'B', 34th Infantry - Alabama
on May 3, 1862. The 34th Infantry was organized at Loachapoka, Alabama on 15 April, 1862.
Singleton was in the battle at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta and at the battle of Franklin, where the 34th escaped the severest part of the fighting, but at Nashville, the remainder of the unit was nearly decimated. With the wreck of the Army, the regiment passed into the Carolinas where it skirmished at Kinston and again at Bentonville. Ultimately consolidated with the 24th & 28th regiments, about 100 of the original 1,000 members of the regiment were surrendered at High Point, North Carolina,
26 April, 1865.
Singleton Posey was paroled (as a POW and wounded) in
Talledega, Al. on July 8, 1865.

George Washington Prater enlisted as a private in Co. B, 34th Ala. Inf. from Marble Valley (extreme NW Coosa Co.) on 5 May 1862. He was 6' had dark hair, grey eyes and had a fair complexion. He went home on a sick furlough in May 62, was sick in the hospital in June (prob. In Tupelo, Miss.) and was in a hospital at Tyner's Station, Tenn. from Aug-Nov. 1862. He died in Shelbyville, Tenn. on 28 April 1863 (and probably is buried there in an unmarked grave). His brother, Lou Morris Prater was 19 and was captured in Kentucky in Oct. 1862, paroled and was captured again during the battle of Missionary Ridge on 25 Nov. 1863. He spent the rest of the war at Rock Island, Ill. Prison until paroled in May 1865

Jesse was born 19 July 1832 in Henry County Georgia. The 1860 census finds him at age 28 in Rockford, Coosa County. Alabama. He enlists for three years on 20 Jan. 1863 in the next county south at Wetumka, Elmore County Ala. He has 14 items in his archival most of which consists of paper fragments in poor condition relating to pay and clothing issues with two mentions of hospitalizations. These papers do show that he served until the end of the illegal invasion.
He died 5 Oct 1905 in Coosa County, Ala. and is buried in the Union Cem. in that county. May the Lord rest his soul.

A Report dated 5 April 1864 shows his rank as 5th Sgt. His wife Mary L Ferguson nee Chapman filed for settlement on 8 Feb.1865. Special order 64/2 dated 10 August 1864 places him on the Honor Roll.

Confederate Veteran Samuel J. Moran who entered the Confederate service from Alabama on March 6, 1862. He served in Co. D, 34th Regiment in General Mitchell‘s Brigade. Samuel was captured at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863, and imprisoned at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois. He was released from there June 20, 1865, on Oath.

The regiment saw slight action in the Kentucky Campaign, Battles of Murfreesboro, Munfordville, Murfreesboro, Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga. In the Alanta Campaign on 28 July 1864, he takes a mini ball thru his right shoulder and loses the use of his right arm. He meets a medical board which finds him disabled and discharges him. He is described as being 5 feet 7 inches, with fair complexion, grey eyes and light hair.
He died 12 June 1922 at Alto, Cherokee Co. Texas and is buried in the Hendrick Cem in that county. He was the father-in -law of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed. Deo Vindice.
