Benjamin J. Gaston - 2nd Lieutenant
|
Second Lt. Gaston is the GGrandfather of my friend, Pete. My GGrandfather was Sgt. Will Newlon of the Iowa 3d Infantry. Both men fought the Shiloh battle.
In 2005 Pete and I visited this battlefield. By plotting Will's Civil War journal entries of the battle and Shiloh Park records of the 26th Infantry and the 3d Iowa, we ascertained that at one point, very close to the Hornet's Nest, our two ancestors may have been within 50 feet of one another! Pete knows very little about Lt. Gaston, his war record and later life. If anyone reading this posting can shed light on Benjamin, please email me. Chris

Ruben F Ponder - Private
|
Ruben was born about 1844 in probably Wayne County, Miss. He is 13 years old on the 1860 census living in Rankin Miss. the Post Office is at Brandon. The supporting data is thin; however, I believe he enlisted at about age 16 or 17 in mid to late 1864 in Co K. [O'Neal's] 26th Ala. Infantry. I found 2 cards in the archival file. 1st R F Ponder which states he is filed under 2nd R Punder. This is only R F Ponder in the records. In late 1864 with the depletion of the ranks and the need for manpower the CSA govt lowered the age of enlistment and extended the age for older troops. He survived the war and was shot to death in 1887 in a shooting that was found as justifiable homicide by the courts. He was the father-in-law of my 3rd cousin 3 x removed.
