Col. A. A. Russell, was the commander of the 4th Alabama's Russell's Raiders. After the war, he refused to take the oath of allegiance to the United States and moved to Mexico. It is said he returned to Alabama from time to time to visit family.

William Gordon Sandlin is my great-great grandfather. He first elisted in the 28th Alabama Infantry (CSA), Huett's Company, at Shelbyville, TN. He was hospitalized in Memphis, TN and then sent home to recuperate. While at home, he was recruitted by Captain Andy Patterson to join the 4th Alabama Calvary until he could meet up with his old unit. He did finally meet up with the 28th Alabama Infantry at Dalton, GA, and was then transferred permanently to the 4th Alabama Calvary.

Alexander had three brothers in the 4th. One brother served with him in the escort company for Roddey. The oldest two were with Co. A.
'While some of these men may have served in the 4th Alabama Cavalry and other units, they were distinguished enough to become Gen. Roddey's escort cavalry or 'Headquarters guards'. Both Thomas and Alexander are listed.

Elijah was born in Monroe Co. Ala. he was 21 years old in 1860. He has 3 cards in his archival file. He enlisted at Camden, Alabama on 7 Aug 1862 in Co A 4th Regiment Ala. Cavalry [ Russell's] He is paid $58.40 for the use and risk for use of his horse. He is found on a Hospital Muster Roll at Saint Mary's Hospital in Montgomery, Ala. on 15 Nov 1864. He rode with Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. I have written his Bio and attached the Regimental history. He is the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed. May God rest his soul. Deo Vindice.

Entered the war as Sergeant, promoted to Lieutenant with Russell's Cavalry. During a raid in 1863 was wounded, necessitating amputation of an arm. After which he resigned his commission being unfit for duty.

Christopher was born in Anson Co. NC 27 Dec. 1819 and died 23 May 1883 in Barbour Co. Alabama. He has 3 cards in his archival file. He enlisted at Montgomery, Ala. 18 Sept 1863 in Co B 4th Battalion Alabama Cavalry [Loves] This later became Co I of Jefferson Davis's legion. and in turn Phillip's Legion of Butlers Division, Hampton's Cavalry. It has been difficult following his actions because of the different organizational changes. I do know his unit was moved into Virginia in 1862 and he joined them there. As the research unfolds I will post that here. He is buried with his wife who is my 3rd cousin 4 x removed at Pea River Presbyterian Ch. Barbour Co. Ala.

J.A.(Alix) Henry is buried at Rock Creek cemetary in Colbert county. He rode with Roddy's brigade based in Tuscumbia Ala. He has a confederate tombstone with his rank. He was married to Lavinia Garrett from Billy Cove in then Franklin county.This is near thje coondog cemetary in the Freedom Hills.

George was born 11 Oct 1844 in Frankfort, Franklin Co. Ala. I have been unable to find his archival file. This data comes from his gravestone and the 1907-1921 census files [ Alabama census of Confederate Soldiers ] He enlisted at age 19 on 29 Sept 1862 at Russellville, Ala. in Co E 4th Regiment Ala. Cavalry [Roddy's]. He was paroled at Pond Springs Ala. on 16 May 1865. He married Sepuata Frances Killingsworth on 30 Dec 1869. I have posted the Regimental History of the 4th [Roddy's] That provides a running account of where he was and actions he was engaged in... If anyone has found his "CMR's =company muster roll's" please contact me. He and his wife are buried at Barton Cem. Barton, Colbert Co. Ala.

Monroe Peden was my Great-Great-Grandfather on my Mother's side of the family. He fought with Company 'F', 4th Alabama Cavalry, With Gen. Roddey. He was discharged after the war, and received his pension.

William rode with Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry, Co.E

Quirl was a nickname and he joined the service using this name. His given name was William Henry. Quirl was in Athens Ala. on company business and became separated from his unit by invasion when the Yankees captured Huntsville Ala. so he briefly rode with Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry Co. H for a few months before rejoining the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment Co. C

Berry was born in lauderdale Co. Alabama and died 7 July 1863 in the battle of Corinth, Alcorn. Miss. He enlisted at age 26 on 14 Nov 1861 at Luka, as a Private in Capt Phillip D Roddy's Co. 4th Battalion Pope Walkers Cavalry. His horse was valued at $225 & equipment at $35. After the battle of Shiloh Apr 6-7 1862 the unit was reorganized as Co H 4th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry [Roddy's] and mustered into Confederate service 1 Nov 1862. Berry died in defense of his homeland at Corinth 7 July 1863. He is still there...God Rest His Soul. He was my 3rd cousin 5 x removed.

George was born in 1826 in Waterloo, Lauderdale Co Ala. He enlisted there on 17 May 1861. His unit fought at the battles: Tuscumbia, Town Creek, Rode with Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest in raids at Athens & Pulaski. Harrisburg & Selma. The major element of his unit was captured at Selma. the remainder laid down their arms at Pond Spring. He was captured 7 Jan 1865 near his home. As POW moved to Camp Morton in Indiana. Exchanged at Akiens Landing on 15 Mar 1865. He is buried at Pisgah Church, Hamburg, Hardin Co. Tenn..

At the age of 29, enlisted 01 Aug 62 at Guntersville in Capt. Fennell's Company, Russell's Battalion of Partisan Rangers [this Co. became Co 'I', 4th Regiment (Russell's) Ala. Cav.]. Value of his horse was $145. Mustered at camp near Taylor's Store, Tn on 22 Sep 62. Captured 02 Oct 63 on a raid in Sequatchie Valley, Tn. Appears on a roll of POW's at Nashville on 14 Oct 63 and forwarded to Louisville, Ky the next day. Then forwarded to Camp Morton, Indianapolis on 16 Oct 63. Paroled at said camp 04 Mar 65 and forwarded to City Point, Va., for exchange with 3,498 other Confederate prisoners.

A great-grand niece of James A. Gormley recalled a story she heard about James. It seems that he was captured by Union soldiers and luckily, Capt. Jacob Crooker a Union soldier who had been smitten with James' sister, Maggie, recognized him and stealthily had him released.

This is my Great Great Great uncle. His Twin Brother Shelton Was captured and died in Chicago. In 1863. My Great great grandfather Irvin was their brother and was in Lewis Cavalry.

Entered at Huntsville, AL,in 1861; was captured on Bragg's retreat from Tullahoma, TN in 1863; was in prison at Camp Norton six months and balance of war at Fort Delaware. [Note: One Civil War document incorrectly identifies him as 'Lowery M. Gormley'.]

Entered service 26 Apr 1861 at Huntsville, AL; discharged 22 Nov 1861 at Richmond, VA. Re-enlisted 5 Sep 1862.

Captured at a skirmish at Sweet Water west of Florence, Alabama January 25, 1864 by a Col. Miller (92nd Indiana Infantry); sent to Camp Chase Ohio via Kentucky; transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland on February 17, 1865; paroled as part of a prisoner exchange in February 1865; walked to Greensboro, NC. He died after 2 weeks and was buried in the 'hospital' garden according to notes which accompanied his diary.
The information below accompanied the diary when it was sent to Clarissa 2 years after the end of the war.
Lieutenant Jesse P. Hurst was taken prisoner by the Federal forces near Florence, Alabama January 25th, 1864. Was a prisoner for 13 months, then released. Reached Greensboro North Carolina and died March 18th, 1865 after lingering two weeks and was buried in the Hospital garden of Greensboro. Prisoner at Camp Chase Ohio.

Jesse was from a divided family, and a member of his family who was a Union officer (it is likely Levi Hurst- his father) sent word to Jesse that if he (Jesse) would take the oath never to fight against the Union again, he would be released in an exchange of prisoners. Jesse refused, so he stayed in prison until February 1865. He was released as part of a large exchange of prisoners as the war was about to end. His family heard nothing for two years, and a letter finally arrived from a woman in Virginia (North Carolina) telling how she had seen this man passing her home, obviously ill and unable to continue. She took him in and cared for him, but he soon died there in Greensboro, NC, and was buried there.
