M. Ulvestad, NORMÆNDENE I AMERIKA (1907), pp. 282 & 625, reports an Erik Nelson FYLKEN from Valdres, resident of Gjerpen, Wisconsin, who was killed in the U.S. Civil War. According to the ROSTER OF WISCONSIN VOLUNTEERS, an Erik Nelson of Eaton was mustered into Company G, 14th Wisconsin Infantry, on 23 Sep 1861, and died on 24 Jul 1862 at Keokuk, Iowa. This soldier was just 23 when he died. There is no one by this name (or closely resembling it) in Eaton Twp. at the time of the 1860 census.

WI 14th Inf Co G. Residence: Eaton, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Born in Norway. Civil War: Age 25. Farmer. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’8½”. Enlisted for three years on 23 Sep 1861 at Eaton and mustered on 30 Jan 1862 at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Private. Took part in the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, 7 Apr 1862. Died 23 Jul 1862 in the general hospital at Keokuk, Iowa. Sources: (WHS red book vol 19, p136).

The soldier Erik was the youngest son of Nils Håvolson Ellestad-Fylken and Turi Eriksdatter Lomen, born on 9 Mar 1838 in Vestre Slidre, Valdres, Oppland, Norway [as shown in parish records].

Enlisted October 20, 1861. Mustered into service January 30, 1862, at Camp Wood, Fond du Lac. Saw action at Shiloh, Iuka, both battles of Corinth. Killed in action by a shot to the head defending Battery Robinette on October 3, 1862. His son, my great-grandfather, was born 2 weeks after his father was killed. Ladislaus Raab is buried at the Corinth National Cemetery. He was a revolutionary in the Hungarian Revolutions of 1848, emigrated to the US in 1857.

Born 10/15/1844 in Milwaukee, WI, grew up in Town of Saukville, Ozaukee County, WI. Enlisted 1/2/1862 in Ashford, Fond du Lac County, WI. Fought at Shiloh, Iuka, Corinth, VIcksburg and Nashville. Not certain if he was on the Red River Expedition of 1864 or was in Worden's Battalion during the Atlanta Campaign of 1864. Mustered out at Nashville 1/30/1865. Suffered from rhumetism due to fording icy rivers and sleeping on frozen ground. Died 2/7/1933 in Port Washington, Ozaukee County, WI.
