Eli Stamper was born to William and Jane (Baldwin) Stamper on July 15, 1837 in Ashe County, North Carolina. He enlisted in Capt. Charles Stevenson's Company, Ferguson's Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, August 5, 1862. This company later became Company A, 16th Virginia Cavalry. The company participated in such memorable exploits as 2nd Winchester, the Gettysburg Campaign, Droop Mountain, Knoxville Siege, Lynchburg, Monocacy, Chambersburg, 3rd Winchester, Petersburg Siege, and Appomattox Courthouse. Eli had also formerly served in the 72nd Virginia Militia.

James H. Stamper was born to William and Jane (Baldwin) Stamper in 1839 in Ashe County, North Carolina. He enlisted in Capt. Charles Stevenson's Company, Ferguson's Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, August 4, 1862. This company later became Company A, 16th Virginia Cavalry. Private Stamper was discharged shortly thereafter due to a severe leg injury.

Eli Jackson served with the 72nd Virginia Militia, Caldwell's Battalion Virginia Cavalry, and 16th Regiment Company B 16th Virginia Cavalry.
He was my maternal great-great-grandfather.

John H. Jackson was originally with 'Caldwell's Battalion' and his unit was mustered into the 16th Va. Calvary, Co. B. John was killed in battle in September 1864.

John had a brother William H. Jackson who was in the 44th Va. Infantry and later joined the 1st Va. after being paroled as a POW.

Hughes Jefferson Warden was a Confederate Soldier with the 16th Virginia Cavalry born December 15, 1831 in Raleigh County, VA (Now WV). Hughes was a 1st Lieutenant in Co. B. He enlisted April 7, 1862 and was last present on roll call October 31, 1864. It is possible he was killed at the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse or refused to pledge his allegiance and went into hiding.

Family tradition says they were cousins and friends and Isaac asked Patton to look after his wife Mary if anything ever happened to him during the war.

Isaac died during the War Between the States and Mary Married (2) Patton J. Brown, s/o Thomas and Rachel Brown on Dec 27, 1865. According to the 1870 census, she had another daughter Rachel F. born 1868.

July 3. The Brigade had been with Ewell's Corps but rejoined the Cavalry Division here on this day about noon. It was armed with Enfield Rifles but an oversight brought to this field only about ten rounds of ammunition. While this lasted it was actively engaged mainly on foot as sharpshooters around and in front of the Rummel Barn and outhouses. It was withdrawn from the field at an early hour in the evening.

He is buried in the Hankins family Cemetery in Baptist Valley.

Patton J. Brown’s father Thomas Brown , lived on top of Mountain Fork Ridge (later called Brown’s Ridge) , near Jewell Ridge, large land speculator, bought and sold many lands, large lands, with son James P. Brown bought a large Dismal Creek tract of 1000 acres from Benjamin H. Warden, among many numerous other land tracts. ~ Married Rachel McIntosh. They had six known children and possibly one other unknown. The known children are William Bird, John M., James P., Mary Lou, Elizabeth “Betsey”, Patton J.

Thomas Brown’s youngest son Patton J. Brown was a thrifty and stern land speculator and business man.
After the civil war at the beginnings of the Town Richland’s and after the industrial depression of 1893 Patton Brown, financially secure, bought back surrendered property lots and joined in revitalizing the town.
Patton was also trustee and land provider for the first High School of Richland’s.
Another of the purchased Properties was the Clinch Valley Coal and Iron Company stone building on Front Street and Suffolk Avenue which was first built to house the Bank in 1891.
As new owner George M. Brown, (adopted?) son of Patton J. Brown commenced business in the office of Bank President of the newly formed Richland’s National Bank on May 16, 1916.
George’s adherence to sound banking principles enabled the Bank to remain in business through the stock crash of 1929, yet his generosity proceeded him... and “he gave freely of his personal funds to help those unfortunate individuals....his acquaintenances were not restricted to any one class, yet included persons from varied circumstances, .. It is doubted if any man has had a greater reputation of Christian Living....”

Patton J. Brown was originally buried in cemetery near at 'Big Lick' where the Clinch Valley Hospital in Richland’s off RT 460 now stands. He was in a crypt with a glass faced iron coffin, where family could view his face and body at family reunions.
Family tradition has it when the time came to remove the cemetery that as the coffin was moved Patton Brown’s body instantly turned to dust.

Patton and Mary where removed to Hankins Cemetery near his Blockhouse homestead.
Where a large Granite Marker inscribed with “Pioneer” was Placed.

A descendant of his had the bodies removed from Hankins Cemetery in the 1970’s
Patton and Mary are now in their final resting place in a mausoleum in Greenhill Memory Garden Cemetery in Claypool Hill.

Capured 8/7/1864 at Moorefield, WV. Taken to Camp Chase, OH, where he died 1/3/1865 from Pneumonia.

The 16 VA CAV was organized as a regiment in January of 1863 when Ferguson's Battalion and
Caldwell's Battalion combined under Ferguson's leadership. Until then, companies under Ferguson were known as Ferguson's Battalion or, sometimes, the Guyandotte Battalion. Most of the men who enlisted in 1862 enlisted into Ferguson's Battalion, made up of six or seven companies. The 16 VA CAV had a total of 10 companies, with Wayne Countians being mostly in E, G, H, and K.

There were at least 10 Fergusons in the regiment and all related in some way.

Simpson was born 7 Feb 1840. He died 4 July 1928. 5 generations back, he was my great, great, grandfather.

Randolph Carter, my 3rd Great Grandfather died while in service of 16th Regiment Virginia Cavalry, Virginia Volunteers,Company F. He enlisted on 1 Feb 1863 at Tazewell Co., Virginia under the command of Capt. Taylor for a period of 3 years. He died on 26 Jan 1864 according to Confederacy Company Muster Roll dated 31 Mar 1864. Randolph was last paid on 31 Aug 1963 by Capt. Ward. I am trying to find out if Pvt.Carter was wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg with the 16th Va.Cavalry Co. F. I know his unit fought at Droop Mountain, (Va) West Virginia following Gettysburg and am not sure if was with his unit if he was wounded at Gettysburg. I am also trying to find where Pvt is buried.

James Henderson Flummer was a Lieutenant in the Virginia 16th Cavalry, Co. F., Caldwells Confederate Battalion.

He commonly went by his middle name, Henderson.

He was born August 15th, 1830 in Tazewell Co., Virginia to William Henderson Flummer and Nancy Agnes Justice. He was their only son, they also had 5 daughters.
James Henderson Flummer married Catherine Elizabeth Harry on January 26, 1854 in Tazewell Co., VA.
James Henderson Flummer, aged 92, died at his home at Falls Mills, Tazewell Co., VA. September 09, 1921.

On July 8, 1864 he was captured at Monocacy Junction, Frederick, Maryland. On July 10, 1864 he was a POW at Fort McHenry, Maryland by General Wallace (Fort McHenry, Md., Register No. 3, page 14). On July 22, 1864 he was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland POW Camp. On November 1, 1864 he was exchanged (Point Lookout, Md., Register No. 1, page 63). On November 15, 1864 he arrived at Venus Point, Savannah River, from John E. Mulford, Lt. Colonel and Asst. Agent for Exchange, with 3,023 paroled Confederate Prisoners of War within the rolls, including four citizens, four Surgeons and 74 Officers (taken from roll No. 72/75, Point Lookout, Maryland). He took the Oath of Allegiance on June 22, 1865 at Charleston, West Virginia. He is listed as age 41, height 6', dark complexion, blue eyes, light hair.

He had service in: 'I' Co. VA 16th Cavalry. Enlisted as a Corporal Oct 9, 1862 in Tazewell County by William L. Graham for a period of three years.

William Mattison Rigsby: born 1845 died 1915 Burke's Garden Virgina (Tazewell County) Co. I 16th Va Cav. List injury to left eye and nasal duct due to exploding weapon (cap) on pension application. Thought to have been captured at battle of Moorefield, WV 1864 and held as POW at Camp Chase OH. Name is abbreviated as Mat.Rigsby or W.M. Rigsby on all offical records.

Enlisted in Company I 16th Regiment, Virginia Calvary.

Russell was my paternal great grandfather. I believe he was about 30 when he enlisted. He survived the war and left the Army as a private.
I am in the process of trying to find more out about him.
