Born in Bedford County, Virginia, May 4, 1825. Graduated from VMI 1846. Teacher at the New London Academy and a Farmer, Liberty, Bedford Co., Virginia. Enlisted in Co. D, 28th Virginia Infantry as 1st Lt. in April 1861. Appointed Adjutant of the 28th Virginia. He was present at Manassas, July 21, 1861. Promoted Captain. Appointed Colonel of the 58th Virginia Infantry Sept./Oct. 1861. Present until died of pneumonia at his residence in Bedford March 4, 1862. Buried in Longwood Cemetery, Bedford. The ladies of Liberty [Bedford] made a special Confederate flag to put over his casket that is still in possession of his descendants.

Henderson Whisman a Civil War Veteran and the son of David Whisman and Nancy Holcomb. He married June 9th 1866 Derina Fannin the daughter of David Fannin and Cynthia Fraley. Eight Children were born: Delphia, Robert Lee, Alpha, Franklin, James Melvin, Mary, Philmore and unknown died shortly after birth. Henderson Was a farmer, During his service in the Civil War he was wounded and left with some life long medical conditions.

Thomas Lindsay- Born and enlisted in Bedford,VA he was wounded in battle near Spotsylvania Court House, after the war he lived in Chester, VA

Enlisted in July of 1861 for a short period in the fall and again in December of 1861 through March of May of 1862. I have no official records after that. he was 55 years old when he enlisted.

Andrew Waldron was born 6 Nov 1836 in Buchanon, Va. He married Nancy Susan Lindsay 5 Feb 1861. He died 14 Mar 1925 in Birmingham, Ala. Andrew was the son of Henry Clinton Waldron and Mary Boyd. Nancy Lindsay was the dau. of Solomon Lindsay and Sarah Hubbard.

JAMES HORN WAS CAPTURED AT FREDERICKSBURG, SENT TO FORT DELAWARE, THEN EXCHANGED. HE WAS CAPTURED AT SPOTTSLVNIA COURT HOUSE. SERVED THE REST OF THE WAR AS A POW AT FT. DELAWARE. AFTER THE WAR HE AND HIS FAMILY MOVED TO MCPHERSON, KS. HE DIED THERE AT THE AGE OF 90 AND IS BURIED IN THE MCPHERSON CEMETARY.

He enlisted on March 15, 1862 at Big Island, Virginia for 3 years service. He was present at the battles of Chantilly, Harper's Ferry, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Williamsport, Bristoe Station, the Mine Run campaign, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House. At this last battle he was captured on May 12, 1864 and sent to Fort Delaware Prison. He died there of Small Pox on March 18, 1865. He is buried at the Finn's Point National Cemetery outside of Philadelphia.

Griffin Bush Jr., was my gg-grandfather, he was from Franklin County, Virginia. He was killed 27 June 1862 at the Gaines' Mill, VA Battle.His Wife was Eliza Jane Trout Bush, they had two sons, Jack, 2yrs old, My g-grandfather and Charles 1 yrs old. Greenville was 34 years old when he enlisted in Amherst Johnson Guard at Millner’s Store on 15 August 1861. Elected First Lieutenant. Captain William A. Higginbotham, Commanding. Amherst Johnson Guards become Company F, 58th VA. 1 May ‘62 - Greenville elected Captain of Company F. Fought in Valley Campaign uner Stonewall Jackson from 6 May ‘62 until 17 June ‘62 - Jackson’s Army leaves for Richmond. Left camp for Waynesboro, through Jarman’s Gap. Boarded railroad at Mechum’s River Station. Took railroad through Charlottesville to Beaver Dam Station near Richmond.

Battle of Gaines Mill, 27 June ‘62 - Departed Hundley’s corner for Old Cold Harbor to attack Federal right flank. Ewell’s Division (and the 58th) was at the head of the column. Elzey’s Brigade sent into battle to the right of D. H. Hill’s division. Elzey’s opposition on the attack was Sykes Division, 2nd Brigade (Lovell), including the 2nd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and 17th US Regiments (Regulars). It was during this engagement of the Battle of Gaines Mill that Captain Greenville Camden was mortally wounded. He died on July 18, 1862. I can find no record of his hospitalization or his burial.

Greensville was not wounded at Gaines Mill but remained with the 58th until they left Richmond and moved north. He was killed by Martin L Brown as CO F camped near Orange VA. Brown was a former LT in Company F. Brown was found innocent at trial because no witnesses were able to attend (they were away fighting).

Abram Clements was my great-great grandfather. Abram Clements was killed in battle at Harrisonburg, Virginia on June 6, 1862. He was 39 years old and less than 100 miles from his home.

James H. McDaniel - Confederate Veteran of the 58th Virginia Infantry.
Confederate States Army Capt. James D. Morrison's Co, (Kerr's Creek Confederates) Virginia Volunteers.
This unit was later designated H Company, 58th Virginia Infantry. According to military records on file in Richmond, Virginia, James was reassigned to G Company, 58th Virginia Infantry in April 1862.
He is listed on the original muster dated 1 Aug 1861 as one of 62 privates. He was listed as wounded in the Wilderness, 6 May 1864.
Special Order No. 49, Head Quarters, Department Northern Virginia, 21 Feb 1865 states 'The following named men will report for duty as indicated below, to await action on application for retirement. Pvt Jas. H. McDaniel Co. G 58th Va. Regt. for light duty to report to Brig Gen W. M. Gardner Com. of Post Richmond. By command of Gen. R. E. Lee, A. A. General.' The signature on the order is not legible. Records also indicate that he reported to the surgeon in charge at the Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, Virginia 28 Feb 1865 while still assigned to G Company. His rank throughout the records is listed as private.

He was my 3rd great grandfather. I was told through genealogy research that him and his brother William C. Muterspaw, were two of the only four remaining men left of their company at Appomattox.

This was my great great grandfather. who I was named after. he enlisted in Staunton on 8/1/1861 as 2nd cpl. present until awol 7/31/62 as sgt. until 8 of 1863. reduced to cpl. not an impressive record but all the more interesting to find out why these things happened.

Grandle was my great grandfather and was from Lacey Spring, Plains District in Rockingham County, VA. His records indicate he was in Company H, 58th Virginia Militia. He had two brothers, also in the CSA. Christian (Christy) served in Co. H, 10th VA Calvary and the other brother, Emanuel Grandle, served in Company I, 33rd Regiment of VA (Stonewall Brigade). All three brothers survived the war. William Cutler is buried in Lacey Spring Cemetery; Christian is buried in Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Dayton, VA., and Emanuel is buried in Winchester Military Cemetery, Winchester, VA. Their great grandfather, Godfrey Grandle served in the American Revolution from New York.

Died of typhoid February 12, 1862 at Camp Zollicoffer, Alabama

Wounded in the right hand at Fredricksburg.

Jonathan D. St. Clair was wounded at the battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864 and died June 16, 1864 at the Chimborazo Hospital.

John R. Williams, a farmer from Bedford Co, VA, enlisted as a private in Co I, 58th Regiment, VA, CSA, on 7/24/1861. John was convicted of desertion and sentenced to die; however his sentence was commuted, and he was allowed to rejoin his unit. John was injured three weeks later during the battle of Petersburg, captured and taken prisoner by the Union Army, and held at Hart's Island, NY for the duration of the war. He was released at the end of the war after signing an oath of allegiance to the United States. John returned to farming; however, eventually had to turn the farm over to his son, as his Civil War injuries rendered him unable to successfully run his farm. He entered the Robert E Lee Confederate Soldiers Home in Richmond, VA, and lived there until his death 4/1/1908. He is buried in the Confederate section of the Hollywood Veterans Cemetery in Richmond,VA; and his great-great grandsons are in the process of having a monument placed on his gravesite.

William Peter Thomas was in the trenches at Petersburg, and participated in the battle of Hatcher's Run. He was wounded March 15, and sent to the hospital at Farmville, and then to the hospital in his hometown, Bedford where his sister, aunt & a cousin were nurses or matrons at the hospital. There is a pdf document that can be downloaded from my website with images of his letters from Petersburg & Farmville, just weeks before the final surrender at Appomattox.
