KIA Gettysburg July 3,1863

Enlisted in Company A, Virginia 18th Infantry Regiment on 23 Apr 1861. Promoted to Full Captain. Mustered out on 29 May 1861. Commissioned an officer in on 29 May 1861. Killed in Action 10 May 1864 near Drewry's Bluff, Virginia

John Randolph 'Jack' Oakes, Born Abt. 1835, Died: unknown, enlisted in Company A, 18th Virginia Infantry, Confederate States of America, on 20 Aug 1862. He deserted 20 Nov 1862 at Culpeper, Virginia and was dropped from the rolls on 31 Aug 1863.

He was my 2x great grandfather.
He enlisted Mar. 12, 1862, in Danville, Va.,
and died of illness, on May 20, 1862, in Richmond,Va.
He is buried in The Hollywood Cemetery, in Richmond.

Brice Collins, Born: 25 Feb 1835, Died: 17 Jul 1863, enlisted on 14 Aug 1862 at Danville, VA as a Private. He was drafted into Company B of the 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He never reported to the Company for duty because of illness. He died from the measles at Camp Lee, Richmond, Virginia. Brice's actual date of death is uncertain. The date of death on his headstone/memorial marker in the family cemetery is 07 Jul 1863. It is very well possible and conceivable that his headstone is a 'cenotaph'. Some sources/record list Brice Collins as being assigned to Company B of the 38th Regiment, Virginia Infantry and some sources list him as being assigned to Company B of the 18th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Records placing him in Company B of the 18th Regiment, Virginia Infantry provide more in reference to his illness which is verified in the letters written to his wife, Christine Ann, 'Christie', prior to his death. Although he never reported for duty the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System list him in Company B, 18th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Willis Elliott enlisted at the age of 29 in Company C of the 18th Va. Infantry under Captian Henry T. Owen. He enlisted on June 19, 1861 and was from Prince Edward County. He was a Private and listed as a Baggage Handler, on pay roll records from the National Archives. He was in many major battles and was captured at Burkeville, Va, near Appomatox on April 6, 1865. He was released to return home on June 11, 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland. He married soon after his return home and became the father of 10 children. Submitted by Robert Elliott, Louisville, Ky. a great grandson.

Eldest brother of William Taylor Gibbs and Thomas William Gibbs. Died at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA in 1864. Home place near Rice, Virginia in Prince Edward County.

Youngest brother of Robert A. and William Taylor Gibbs. Died of wounds at battle of Frayser's Farm...a.k.a. Glendale...June 30, 1862.

Enlisted with brothers Robert A. and Thomas William Gibbs 5/61.
Fought honorably the entire war, eventually losing both brothers. Was POW at battle of Saylers Creek on April 6th, 1865 ironically less than 5 miles from his home place near Rice, VA only three days before Lee's surrender. Sent to Point Lookout prison until 6/1865. Received Confederate pension from state of Virginia in 1908. Died in 1917 and is buried in Gibbs family plot at Moran, Virginia.

Alpheus Beverly R. Moring was one of the unfortunate souls that lost his life in the Civil War, not to wounds from the battle field, but to the scourge of disease.
He was a conscript late in the war to the 18th Virginia Infantry, Company C. Sadly, after less than one month of service he died from a brief bout with dysentery.

This is my great great grandfather. I do know that he was injured at Gaines Mill and again three days later at Frayser Farm. He was also wounded and captured at Gettysburg and was held as a POW at Point Lookout until the end of the war. He is now buried in Nottaway Co Va.

My great-grandfather, James Spencer Dunford Pvt. joined Co. D, Prospect Rifle Grays on August 22, 1863.

He was born in Cumberland County, Virginia about 1830, and lived in Cumberland his entire life.

He fought in battles at New Berne and Kinston, NC at Fort McKee, Drewrys Bluff, the Howlett Line in Chesterfield County, Va., Hanover Junction, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, 5 Forks road and The Battle of 5 Forks in Dinwiddie County, Va., The Battle of Saylers Creek, where he was captured on April 6, 1865 and taken to Point Lookout, Maryland as a prisoner, and later paroled on June 12, 1865.

James Peyton Glenn enlisted as a private in Company D of the Prospect Rifle Grays in May 1861. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant at muster.
He was wounded in the ear at Gaines Mill. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in July 1862. Shortly afterwards, he was severely wounded
in the thigh at 2nd Manassas and spent several months recovering from his wound. He returned to duty in May 1863 as the company
commander of Company D. He led his company at Gettysburg where he was wounded in the leg and captured during Pickett's Charge
on July 3, 1863. After spending the next two months in Union Army Hospitals, he was sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio where he remained
until his exchange in March of 1865. He was promoted to the rank of Captain after his exchange and may have rejoined his regiment for
the last days of the war. After the Civil War, James Peyton Glenn was married had several children and became a farmer and high school
principal in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He died in October of 1907.

Robert enlisted 1 April 1864 for 3 years at Thessiol [sp] by Capt. Robert's. He has not been paid.

Joel William Shepard is buried on the home place just South of Cumberland County. The headstone was placed on his burial location by Ms. W. A Shepard in 1930. Joel entered into service on 10 August 1863 with Company D, (Prospect Rifle Grays). He entered as a Private and left as a Private.

His son, Nelson P. Cocke, who died at age 91 was my wife''s uncle, by marriage, and I knew him well. He said Edmund, his father, of Prince Edward Co. Va, lost part of his ear in the final charge at Gettysburg, was captured at Sailor''s Creekin 1865, and imprisoned on Johnson''s Island in Lake Erie. I came across a reference to him in PICKETT''S CHARGE ed.by Richard Rollins near the stonewall. He died in 1921 and his obit was in THE CONFEDERATE VETERAN. He was a student at Princeton when the war broke out. His mother hosted Robert E. Lee at their estate ''Oakland'' near Cartersville, Va.,when Lee was on his way to assume the presidency of what was to become Washington and Lee university.

My great-grandfather entered service in Nov. 1862.He was in Co. E,the Cumberland unit.HE served until June 1864.HE was wounded at Cold Harbor on the first day.A shell passed over the battle lines and he was severly wounded in the left arm.Ironically the 18th was not involved in that days fighting.Talk about bad luck.He was hospitalized in Richmond.Upon release he walked home to Lunenburg Co..There he remained until his death.He was a tobacco farmer

In 1860 Census of Amelia County, VA. Misspelled ''Cawley'' or sometimes ''Colly.'' One of his sons, Samuel Valentine Colley (my father''s maternal grandfather), died in 1924 in Missouri.

Joseph Allen Hawkins, my 2nd. Great Uncle was born in 1839 in the Lewiston ( Kenbridge) area of Lunenburg County, Virginia. He like several brothers and his father, enlisted into the Confederate States Army to defend Virginia from Lincolns invaders. He joined the 18th. Virginia Infantry, and was later wounded.

My great grand-uncle John Ranson of Cumberland County, Virginia, joined Co. F, The Farmville Guard on March 20, 1862, and was involved in many battles, Yorktown,Williamsburg,Seven Pines,Fair Oaks,Gaines Mill,Frayers Farm where he was wounded, then on to South Mountain, Sharpsburg,Fredericksburg,Picketts Charge at Gettysburg,Petersburg,5 Forks, Saylers Creek, where he was captured and later paroled in Farmville where he enlisted 3 years earlier. He cwas born in 1826 and died in 1909 and is buried in a marked grave in Westview Cemetery in Farmville, Va.

Wounded in the ankle at Gaines Mill. Missed action through Gettysburg. He was a timberman and, in 1874, was hit in the head and killed by a falling tree. The wound troubled him for the rest of his life and, while maybe it saved his life by keeping out of much of the action, it could have ended up killing him by causing him to be unable to get out of the way of that falling tree. Eight months after his death, his wife bore him a son that he may not even have known about.

Enlisted at the beggining of the war served under Bushrod johnston and col Carrington, Captured at gettysburg,Picketts charge released from prisonin a prisoner exchange walked back to Buckingham county with no shoes and burlap rags wrapped around his feet.He got frost bite when the burlap froze to his feet from crossing streams returned to service and was with lees army at appomattox where his twin brother madison was jailer.it was said he carried two muskets and two large revolvers he died lynchburg va 1916 as a result of that frost bite which never completely healed and is buried city cemetary Lynchburg

1st cousin of John Thomas Lee and of Marcellus W. Cheatham's wife.

Elam, my great grandfather, was shot in the leg during Pickett''s infamous charge at Gettyburg and the wound plagued him for 40 years. The bullet was never removed. In 1904, his leg was finally amputated and he died of the operation -- thus probably the last Confederate soldier to die of a Yankee bullet.

Joined 14 Aug 1863, POW 6 Apr 1865 near Farmville,Va, released 15 June 1865, Died 30 June 1865 due to severe diarhea from imprissonment.

Capt. William Thomas (W.T.) Johnson was a Captain of the 18th Infantry, Company H, Appomattox Grays. He was injured during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and captured. He was on the roster of the Immortal 600 who were shipped from the Fort Delaware Prison to South Carolina, but may not have endured the bad treatment because of his injury. After the war, he became a sheriff of Appomattox County. He lived near or in Pamplin. He is buried in the Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Brother in law of Marcellus W. Cheatham. Often detailed as a teamster. Was a justice of the peace at Chap, Va. in Appomattox Co. in later years.

Peter was a 24 year old and listed his occupation as a Tobacconist. He enlisted At Pamlin Depot on 7 May, 1861. He mustered in at Richmond by J.B. Baldwin. Remarks on CMR card / On sick fulough from Culpepper Court House 11 Sept. 1861. He was paid from enlistment on 30 June 1861.
He was promoted to 1st Corporalon 2 Dec. 1861. He was wounded at Seven Pines, His records show that he was received at Richmond Hospital and transferred to Episcopal Church Hospital at Williamsburg, Va. He had wound to knee. He was recommended for medical retirement as his right knee had been shot away and the medical board could think of no useful service he could provide. Medical retirement granted 4 Nov. 1864.

Sammi Usry Wallace, born in Lewiston (Kenbridge) Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1833, joined Co. H2, 59th. Virginia Infantry Regiment and honorably served his state and his family in the War for Southern Independence. He later died in 1910.

Nathan Betterton, age 23 enlisted on April 24, 1861 in Danville, Pittsylvania Co., VA. Quill Pen-Pittsylvania Historical Society calls this unit 'Spring Garden Blues' in one of their publication. Other reports call it 'CO B 18 Inf'.
He was wounded and captured at Gettsyburg, PA on July 3, 1863. He was dropped from the roll as dead. His burial is unknown.

John Joseph Covington was my great grandfather.

Peter was captured in gettysburg along with his brother Temple Thomas on July 3 1863. He was proled in 1864 and rejoined his unit. And surrendered April 9 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse. He raised a family and died in 1915. Temple Thomas Davis died at point Lookout maryland 1864

Thomas was captured at gettysburg July 3, 1863. Sent to Point Lookout Maryland. He did not survive and died at Point Lookout Maryland. The oficial monument at the Park list his name as T.T. Davis.

John W.A. Ledbetter was born March 29, 1827 at Appomattox Co. He entered the Southern Army by joining the 18th Virginia Regiment Co. K Charlotte Rifles on August 5, 1863 at age 35. He was a farmer and was 5’10”, blue eyes, light complexion. Was part of Hunton’s Brigade, Picketts Division.
May 16, 1864 at Drewry’s Bluff his left arm was amputated below the elbow from grape shot. Spent the remainder of war at home.
Died October 18, 1896 at Roanoke Virginia, he was 69 years old. Buried at Fairview Cemetery Roanoke Virginia.

Col. Spencer commanded the Charlotte Rifles, the first company formed in Charlotte County for the War between the States, in the 18th Virginia Infantry, which Regiment was among the first to engage in the First Battle of Manassas. He was later commissioned Lieut-Col. and assigned to the Reserves in the defense of Richmond in Ewell''s Corps, and had the unique distinction of being the ranking commissioned officer of that great corps, the remnant of which surrendered at Appomattox, where he acted as Lieut-Gen by order of General Robert E. Lee and paroled the Corps.
