James Barbour Terrill - General |
He was a VMI graduate. He began as Major in 1861, was promoted to Lt. Col. and Col., regimental commander. He was killed on 30 May at Totopotomy Creek in Hanover County near Bethesda Church. The Confederate Congress approved his (posthumous) promotion to Brigadier General on 31 May 1964. His brother was William Rufus Terrill, who was a West Point graduate, served as a Brigadier General in then Union Army and was killed in battle at Perryville, Kentucky.

Brandy Rifles, enlisted April 16, 1862. Born in 1828, Culpeper, VA. Married Ann W. Dempsey, Dec. 24, 1850. Ann's aunt, Katherine Dempsey was the 'Widow Tapp' of 'Widow Tapp's Farm' referenced in the Battle of the Wilderness. Died of 'chronick' dysentary upon return home in 1865. Regiment continued fighting two months after Appomattox where he faced in battle his future grandson's father-in-law.
