Skelton Columbus Coleman - Private |
Skelton enlisted May 1 1862 at Norfolk, VA. Shortly after enlisting, he was admitted to the hospital. He stayed in the hospital for about 7 months. He is listed as present until late 1864 where his muster rolls end. According to his pension application, he faught in most of the major battles and was with Lee at Appomattox. Skelton died May 11, 1904 and is buried in the Reed Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Henry Co, VA.

William was born in North Carolina 1842. Enlisted 5/6/1861 in Norfolk County.4/3/1865 was POW in Petersburg, 6/20/1865 took oath and released. Lived in Dinwiddie County then moved back to Norfolk area. He was a member of Pickett-Buchanan Camp,UCV.
He died 2/25/1918. He is my g-g-grandfather.

Judson E. N. Doughtie enlisted as a private in Company E, 6th Infantry Regiment Virginia on August 6, 1861. He was hospitalized for measles on October 18, 1861. He reenlisted in Company E, 6th Infantry Regiment Virginia on April 30, 1862 and was promoted to Sergeant. (Judson El) Nathan Doughtie died of disease on May 14, 1863 in Richmond, Va. Some sources indicate he died in a hospital in Farmville, Va.

Thomas Clay Baird - Private |
Thomas Clay Baird was born in Brunswick County, Va. The meherrin parish district what is modern day Gasburg, Va. right on the well known Lake Gaston. When the draft came through for young southern men to join the confederate Thomas was exempted for service for what is filed as 'dropsy' he enlisted anyway. Thomas served with Company G 6th Virginia Infantry. At the battle of Crater, Petersburg Virginia Thomas Baird was wounded by taking a 'minie bullet' or rifled bullet to the head, the bullet creased his skull amazingly he survived. For the rest of his days he had a sunken spot in his skull. Thomas Clay Baird would be my 4th great grandfathers brother 'uncle thomas clay baird'

John Richard Sampson - Corporal |
John enlisted at Norfolk City on 19 April 1861 in Capt. Richard C Taylor's Co. 6th Regiment Va. Infantry. He is 18 years old and musters in at Craney Island by Col. Richardson on 30 June 1861. He is a mechanic and is assigned duty as a crew member of the Col's Barge crew. His enlistment is extended for the war. 15 Nov. 1862 he loses his rifle and accoutrements. He is a patient in Chimborazo Hosp. #3 suffering from Typhoid Fever. He is promoted to Corporal 10 August 1862. There is a letter in his file where the CSA Navy requests his transfer from the Army to the Navy. He survived the war. UPDATE: The above mentioned letter requesting transfer to the Department of the CSA Navy was written on 6 Nov. 1862 by The Secretary of the Confederate Navy, Stephen Russell Mallory. That letter is in John's Archival file.

Great-grandfather, William Pittman Kidd was born Feb. 3, 1840 in Manchester, VA (now southside Richmond). Upon secession, Kidd enlisted in the Elliott Grays which became Co. I, 6th Virginia Infantry. Kidd never saw action. Shortly after First Manassas, Kidd provided a substitute.
