Company D
Cyrus Benton Leach - Captain
Cyrus B. Leach, my paternal grandfather's father, was born in Barnet, Vermont, in 1827, and was a miller at the time of enlistment in Bradford, Vermont. He had previously served for 3 months in the 1st Vermont at a sergeant before recruiting his company for the 8th Vermont. He saw duty with the regiment in Louisiana, where he contracted malaria, dengue fever, and dysentery, diseases which eventually led to his early death in 1881 at the age of 54 years. He was involved in the bloody battle of Port Hudson in support of Grant's Vicksburg campaign. His recurrent bouts of illness caused his being forced to return east for treatment and eventual discharge. Cyrus was married to Laura Jenks, of Lyme, NH, a descendant of Roger Williams, John Winslow, Francis Cooke, Stephen Hopkins, Rhode Island colonial governor Joseph Jenks III, and Roger Conant. Laura lived until 1920.
