My GG Grandfather recd a confederate pension recorded as follows Pension #S10547. Giles Co TN, 45th Infantry.

Wounded at the Battle of Shiloh

From muster records and discharge certificate 12-09-1861 to 02-02-1863

1834-1862 Enlisted in November 1861. Died 16 May 1862. Possibly wounded at the Battle of Shiloh and died in hospital about 5 weeks later in Mississippi.

Elected Captain at Camp Trousdale. Was promoted to Major on the second day of the Battle of Stones River. His farm was in Smyrna. He survived the war and returned to Smyrna. His ancestors continue to reside on that land. The Moore farm and the Sam Davis family farm were divided by Stewart’s Creek. Maj. Moore is buried in the Moore/Mitchell family cemetery.

Moses Woodfin enlisted with 3 brothers from the Murfreesboro area. The brothers were in the 18th Regiment. Moses and Hugh White Woodfin were captured in the Battle of Missionary Ridge and were sent to Union prisons until the end of the war. I would be interested in any history of this regiment or his company.

Granville was born 4 Oct 1835 in rural Rutherford County, near Murfreesboro, Tenn. The 1860 census finds him in district #8 in that county with the post office at Prinne. He has 18 cards in his archival file. He enlists at Murfreesboro on 2 Nov 1862 for 3 years, enlisted by A. Hall. He was promoted to the rank of 1st Corporal on 1 Oct 1863. He sees action at Shiloh, Baton Rouge, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and Chattanooga where he is captured and sent to the military prison at Louisville, Ky and on to Rock Island Barracks in Illinois. The last card in his archival card shows him as a POW being release on 21 May 1865 form the Rock Island prison.

The 45th Tenn. Infantry was organized at Camp Trousdale in Dec of 1961 after the losses at the battle of Chattanooga it was consolidated with the 23rd Tenn Infantry which when combined contained only 316 men.

Granville Married in 1858 to Julia Ann Murphy. He died 2 Sept 1889 at Almaville, Rutherford County and is buried in the Wray - Covington Cem. in that town. We are related by a distant marriage.

Thomas J Alford enlisted early in the War. He was captured in Triune, Tennessee, in December 1864 after the Battle of Nashville.

According to wife Susan (Herron) Miller's application for Confederate Widow Pension Application, he served in Co E 45th Tennessee Infantry. Enlisted 11/30/1861 and was last on rolls 8/31/1864. Wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN 7/2/1863 with a leg wound. Company surrendered in North Carolina 1865?? Susan states on the pension application that William Miller was born 10/4/1833. Tombstone has 10/3/1835

Thos. Branch's service record simply said 'Died Feb. 12, 1862' (18 years old). He is buried on our farm about 15 mi. East of Nashville. No one knows how he came to be there nor who are in the five (5) other unmarked graves surrounding him.

A.J. Carver enlisted in Co. F in Dec. 1861 and stayed in that company throughout the war until he was wounded and lost his left arm at Jonesboro, GA. He applied for his Confederate Pension in 1906 stating that he never took the oath of allegiance.

George Washington Crawley was my GG uncle.

W D Crawley Also went by Major David Crawley of the 48th Tenn. Nice to know the military never changes.

Confederate Service Records show G.B. Hackney serving as a Private in G Company 45th Tennessee Infantry from 16 Dec 1861 to 16 Jan 1862 when he died in service.

William Lannom,Pvt. Company G, enlisted November 6, 1862 in Murfreesboro, TN. Listed as a deserter in April 1863 when 'sent to his home until he got well, so able for duty and has not reported to his command' according to Confederate Service Records.

George Washington Buchanan Shannon was abt 31 years old. Born in Wilson Co. Tenn. Enlisted 6 Nov 1862 at Murfeesboro, Tenn. for 3 years. Enlisted by Co Hall. Enlisted as Pvt. He died of disease at Winship & Blackie Hosp. at Atlanta Ga. His father went to retrieve his body but it was buried in a mass grave at Oakwood Cem. His Death card listed his rank as Sergt. He was the Father in Law of my 3rd cousin 2 x removed.

Wounded at Shiloh APRIL, 1862 by rifle ball entering shoulder joint, exited shoulder blade. Evacuated to Corinth MS. and returned home to Murfreesboro, TN to heal under the care of his family. Returned to unit, Co. K, 45 TN Inf. at Stones River days before the battle. Unable to shoulder a pack he was placed in mounted inf. He was shot through the left leg and evacuated to Chattanooga, TN. Jan.1863. Initial application for pension was rejected and SImeon moved to Texas. Upon returning to TN he was able to locate 45 Inf. company clerk who could verify service. Supporting letters issued by doctor and younger brother who treated wounds. WIfe Jennie was given widows pension after his death.
