John Henegar Miller - Private
U.S. Pvt. John Henegar Miller was my GG Grandfather, William LaFayette 'Fate' Miller's older brother. He was 5'6' with blue eyes and fair hair. He was a farmer and from Harrison/Dallas Bay (North of Chattanooga, TN), Hamilton County, Tennessee. He Volunteered and Enlisted in the Union Army on 8 August 1864 at the age of 18 and 'Died of wounds received in action January the 26th 1865.' His Military headstone is in Jackson Chapel Cemetery in present day Chester Frost Park North of Hixson, TN. It is unclear if his body was ever recovered from the battlefield in Lafayette, Georgia where he was killed in action.

William H. Martin - Private
William H. Martin was born 17 Jul 1845 in Roane County, TN, and enlisted on 1 Feb 1861 with Company B in Chattanooga at the age of 19 years (while living in Meigs County, TN, with his widowed mother and siblings). William H. Martin contracted smallpox in April 1865 and died at the Pest House in Dalton, GA, most probably on 31 May 1865. His burial site is unknown, but he may be one of four unknown Union soldiers buried at Dalton's West Hill Cemetery. Another option is a lost cemetery just north of the location of the Pest House, about 3 miles south-southwest of Dalton near a branch of Drowning Bear Creek.

Moses DeFriese Miller - Private
MY GGG Grandfather, Moses D. Miller born in Roane County, TN on 05/10/1815 and was mustered into the Union Army with Two of his sons John Henegar Miller and James Alfred Miller from Hixson(Harrison)/Chattanooga, Tennessee. Moses in 09/12/1864 who died of Smallpox at the Post/Pest Hospital in Dalton, GA 1 June 1865 and is likely one of the 4 'unknown Union Soldiers' buried at the Confederate Cemetery on Cuyler Street. John Henegar Miller was a Sgt. in Co. D of the 6th Tennessee Infantry and was killed in action in LaFayette, GA 01/26/1865, and James Alfred Miller served in Company A,D,G, and finally F of 4th Tennessee Cavalry and was taken prisoner at the Chattahoochee River at Liberty Hill, GA 7/31/1864 and held in captivity at Andersonville Prison and exchanged 04/01/1865 at Vicksburg, MS and discharged on 12 July 1865 having served 2 years, 2 months, and 24 days.

Benjamin J. Bailey (on his enlistment papers Benjamin J. Baley)was my great-great-great grandfather. He was born in Wilson County, Tennessee and lived his adult life and died in Whitwell, Marion County, Tennessee. He met and married in Whitwell Emily West and had 10 children. He was well known in his community and upstanding citizen and community activist. He was a farmer, started an elevator car to coal mines in the Whitwell mountains of the Sequatchie Valley, and was also once a sherriff for Whitwell.

WILLIAM LAND Rank: Privt Age: 26 Enlisted: Mar 3 64 Mustered: Mar 3 64 Remarks: Det as Sgt Major Nov 26 64 Sixth Mounted Infantry TENNESSEE (1-YEAR) Sixth Mounted Infantry. -- Lieut.-Col., George A. Gowin; Maj., William H. Bean. This regiment was organized in Hamilton county, Oct. 24, 1864. It was employed for some time by Gen. Steedman in scouting the Cumberland Mountains in Tennessee and northern Georgia after the guerrilla bands which infested that region, and it had several severe engagements with the bushwhackers. In March, 1865, the regiment was turned over to the commander of the department, and was soon afterward placed under Gen. Judah, commanding at Decatur, Gal, where it continued its scouting until the surrender of the Confederate army. It was then ordered to Resaca. On June 18, 1865, it was ordered to Nashville and on the 30th of that month was mustered out. Source: The Union Army, vol. 4, p. 389 ( Former Confederate of Co.H, 35th Tenn.Inf. )

Served from 1864 to 1865.

John was a member of his local GAR Post (John R. Swan post) according to his obituary.

John could be the same "John Stephens" listed in the ranks of the 28th Tennessee Infantry (Confederate States Army) from 1861 to 1863.
