Campaign under Lee in West Virginia, Sept.-Nov. ''61. Unit went to South Carolina under Lee, then Pemberton around Pocotaligo, S. C., participated in minimal degree at Battle of Port Royal, S. C.. Within days of Shiloh they were transferred to Mississippi. Participated in skirmishing at Corinth, very heavy on May 28th. Donelson''s Brigade on Kentucky Campaign. W. H. White made Regimental Color-bearer before commencement of this campaign. He and the entire color-guard were wounded with one guard killed. He was hit in the leg by grapeshot from Parson''s Federal Battery about 300 yards northeast of Perryville visitor center. The regiment suffered 199 casualties out of 400 engaged. After return to central Tennessee, 180 new recruits joined the regiment and they marched into the next battle with 407 men. W. H. White was in hospital the 1st day of the fight still recovering from his wound at Perryville, but checked out that morning to go in search of his unit. Luckily for him he missed the actions of Dec. 31, ''62, as the regiment suffered over 50% casualties again (207 of 402 engaged). The regiment struck the round forrest or Hell''s half acre defended by Hazen''s Brigade at the pivot point of the Confederate line next to the river. They also were present suffering 67 casualties at the Battle of Chicamauga in Sept. ''63, and then 9 casualties at Missionary Ridge in Nov. ''63. Dec. ''63 they had 212 present with 157 effectives. Participated in the daily fighting of the Atlanta campaign from May through Aug. ''64. Lost dozens of men thoughout that fighting including Atlanta and the battles around there. Consolidated with the 8th and 28th Tennessee in Sept. ''64 at Palmetto Station, Ga. as companies A, D and E. W. H. White reduced temporarily to supernumerary and serves in the ranks as NCO. They commence the Tennessee campaign with about 100 men present, probably about 80 effectives. Suffer a staggering 19 killed in action in the short but bloody Battle of Franklin on Nov. 30, ''64 seven more die of mortal wounds with at least 25 more wounded. W. H. White is returned officer ranks and commands one of three companies through the remainder of the campaign after the death of Lt. J. P. Green at Franklin. They go on to fight at Nashville losing a small number captured on the sewcond day of the battle (Dec. 16,''64). They are assigned as part of the rear guard under Generals Walthall and Forrest and participate in the actions a Sugar Creek, Anthony''s Hill and Pulaski inflicting numerous casualties on the Federal pursuers. After returning to Tupelo, the regiment continues on to North Carolina after a short furlough, and fights at Bentonville losing at least one man killed, but repulsing the advance of Fed. troops near Gen. Johnston''s H.Q.. They parole upwards of 50 men at Greensboro, N. C. in April 1865. W. H. White tendered his resignation as commissioned officer in the 16th Regiment in Feb. ''65 on the grounds that he had only 3 privates and 5 NCOs left in his company under his command. He was then denied this resignation by all commanders excepting Hood who approved his transfer to the 4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. He was transporting prisoners to Andersonville when the Battle of Bentonville was fought in Mar. ''65, and missed that fight. He arrived at Greensboro in April of ''65 and left the army before paroles were issued. He had never been in the hands of ''no damn Yankees'' and swore he never would be. He was issued a hand written parole by Gen. Dibrell at Augusta, Ga. in the dame month and returned home on foot to McMinnville, Tenn..
