William Thomas 'Tom' Cunningham was born 20 March 1838 in Trigg County, Kentucky, to William and Janot (Jennie) (Mitchell) Cunningham; died 20 May 1915 Trigg County, Kentucky. Enlisted in the fall of 1861; remained in service three years; was taken prisoner at Gallatin, Tennessee and was confined on Johnson's Island for seven months until exchanged.

I believe he died dec 1862 Murfreesboro ( found record for this but has listed his brothers name) Cannot find any records of him after this so as of now he is still POW/MIA.

Henry Clay Dunavant - 3rd Lieutenant
Entered the Confederate army, enlisting in Company E, First Confederate Cavalry. He participated in the battles of Paris (Tenn.), Guotown (Miss.), Perryville (Ky.), Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and was with the army on the retreat through Georgia. He was with Gen. Wheeler in his celebrated campaigns, and also with Gen. Forrest at Gainesville, Ala., at the time of the surrender.

Leonard Washington Dunavant - 3rd Lieutenant
1st Regiment Confederate Cavalry
(Also known as the 6th, 12th, and 16th Regiment and as Claiborne's and Lay's Regiment Confederate Cavalry) was formed about April 1, 1862, by the addition of four companies to the six companies of which the 1st (King's) Battalion Kentucky Cavalry, or Mounted Riflemen (a field organization) was composed. It surrendered at Gainesville, Alabama on May 12, 1865.

Captain John James Jarnagin was the Commanding Officer of Co.E, 1st Tennessee Cavalry, CSA. He was wounded @ Piedmont, Virginia on June 5, 1864 and died shortly there after. The location of his burial is unknown by the family. He was 26 years old.

Samuel Neff moved to West Tennessee because of the anti Confederate feelings in the east--he had a brother killed after the War by three Lincolnites (April 1865). He was a prisoner of war when the fighting ended, and was paroled in May of 1865, at Asheville, NC.

Brazelton's Battalion was also called the 2nd Battalion and the 5th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion.


Company M: Co. 'M' Organized September 3, 1863 at Jonesboro, Washington Co. from a number of conscripts enlisted within the enemy lines. Attached to this regiment by Brigadier General John C. Vaughn, March 11, 1864. Men from Washington, Sullivan, and Carter Counties. Not accounted for on regi mental roster dated February 1865. Captain Edward Gammon.
