My great-great-grandfather Matthew McSorley served in Company B of the 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. This was the predominantly Irish regiment of the Philadelphia Brigade.
Matthew was died of wounds suffered in action at the Battle of Fredrickburg on December 13, 1862. Company B Roster: http://www.pa-roots.com/~pacw/69th/69thcob.html
Patrick Kelly, presumedly a male relative of the children''s deceased mother, Jane Kelly, became the guardian of Patrick and Mary McSorley. He later filed an application of a pension on their behalf based on their father''s Civil War service.
Patrick Kelly, likely the father or brother of Jane Kelly, lived on Germantown Road above Sesquehanna Avenue at the time of the filing of the pension petition.
There is an affidavit signed by a Rose Kelly and a Catherine Dugan supporting the relationship of Mathew McSorely to Patrick and Mary McSorley. Possible Catherine is the married name of a Kelly??
There is also an affidavit for a Mary McKenna that she is the aunt of Patrick and Mary McSorley.
Patrick Kelly was appointed as Guardian of Patrick and Mary McSorley by order of the Orphans Court in Philadelphia on January 16, 1863.
