On 29 Apr 1861 Wallace enlisted as a Private in Company E 13 Pennsylvania Res. Inf. (42 Pa. Vols. and 1 Pa. Rifles, Pa Bucktails) at Wellsboro, Pennsylvania and was mustered In 31 May 1861 as a Corporal. He served in 10 engagements. He was captured on June 27, 1862 at Mechanicsville/Gaines Mill and released Aug. 5, 1862. He was also wounded at Fredericksburg, on December 13, 1862 and served at Spottsylvania Court House, May 8, 1864. On May 31, 1864, when his original unit was disbanded, he transferred to 190th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He lost his right arm in the fight at Weldon railroad August 19, 1864.
