Adam R. Stover was a Mennonite from Souderton, PA. He joined the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery on June 27, 1863 (as Robert E. Lee's armies were headed towards Gettysburg). In April 1864, he 'volunteered' for the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry (formed from surplus men in the 3rd PA Heavy Arty). The 188th PA fought under Major Francis Reichard at Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, the seige lines at Petersburg, and at Fort Harrison, losing over 10% KIA in under six months of actual combat. Adam Stover died at age 28 in 1872 of consumption/tuberculosis contracted in the service. He left a wife and four children. His wife fought the government for over 25 years to get some pension help.
