Oliver began his active duty and was mustered in at Camp Cleveland, Ohio. May 13, 1864.
May 15th left for Washington DC. Attached to DeRussey's Division, 2nd Brigade, 22nd Army Corps, till July 1864 and attached to DeRussey's Division, 3rd Brigade, 22 Army Corps, till August 1864.
Assigned to duty as garrison to Forts.... Richardson, Ward, Barnard, Reynolds and Worth. Headquarters were at Fort Richardson.
Defences of Washington DC south of the Potomac River till September. July 11th and 12th the 166th repulsed Early's attack on Washington.
Oliver was mustered out September 9, 1864.
There were 39 enlisted men killed by disease.

- Enlisted in Co I, 166th OVI May 1864, which he organized and led into service. - He had previously enlisted/served in April 1861 in Co G, 16th OVI then enlisted in Co F, 19th OVI - Prior to his death on April 29, 1927, he was thought to have been the last living member of that company. - Born Holmes Co., Ohio May 5, 1937,died Mecosta Co., Michigan April 29,1927 - Buried Highland View Cemetery,Big Rapids, Michigan.
