Company B
William Ward - Private
William Ward joined the 99th NY in 1861 leaving a one year old son behind. On January 31, 1864 he was part of a small patrol that was landed in Smithfield, Va along the James River to check on the actions of a Confederate artillery piece which had been firing on Union ships in the river. His patrol was to be picked up at the next high tide but the pick up ship ran aground and was disabled by Confederate artillery. A small battle occurred in the streets of Smithfield and after a short fight with a few casualties the patrol surrendered. Private Ward and the others were taken to Richmond and then to Andersonville. William died in April 1864 at Andersonville.
