Company D
Thomas Farrell
- Musician
Thomas Farrell was not quite 18 when he joined the 2nd NY out of Troy, NY in April of 1861. My family owns some of his letters home in which he speaks of camp life, the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac (which he witnessed from the shore), and the normal complaints of soldier life. He served as a drummer until after the Battle of Fredericksburg, when he was promoted (?) to flag bearer of the unit. He was mustered out in May of 1863 after seeing action at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Upon arrival at Troy, he was presented a watch engraved with the names of the battles the 2nd fought in, for his conduct in battle. He died a few months after coming home, though the causes are unknown. He is my great-great-great uncle, through my paternal grandfather's family.
