Company E
George Wellington Albert Preston - Private
In a book titled 'The Eighteenth Missouri' by Leslie Anders, The Bobbs-Merrill Company. On Page 62 it states.....'while the enemy captured over 130 men of the 18th Missouri, including Colonels Miller and Pratt and most of the company commanders, they never got their hands on the colors of Company E. Private George W.A. Preston of Pennville, on his way to a hospital, was given possession of the huge color-flag of his company to take away from the battlefield for safekeeping. The flag had been made by a half-dozen patriotic ladies of Pennville, while Jake Clark was raising the company. We may never know Preston's full story, but visitors to the main floor of the Capitol in Jefferson City, Missouri, may see the encased colors of Company E on permanent display.'
Page 348, George W.A. Preston, the same who had borne the colors of Company E to safety from the field of Shiloh, acted as Justice of the Peace in Sullivan County (Milan,Missouri) until his death in 1898.

Company H
Peter Schaback - Private
Enlisted December 12th, 1861 at Weston, Platte County, MO. Peter was a native of Germany, having immigrated to America in 1854. Peter was captured at Shiloh while fighting with the remnants of his company in the Hornet's Nest. He was sent with the other prisoners first to Corinth, MS, then to Memphis, TN, then down to Mobile, AL for a time, next shortly to a prison at Montgomery, AL, then to Chattanooga, TN for exchange however the exchange was cancelled at the last moment. He was then sent to the prison camp at Macon, GA and stayed there until permanently exchanged. While in prison at Macon, the makeshift barracks collapsed upon him, reigning 5 comrades as well as building timbers on top of him. This caused massive bruising all over his body, an injured arm, leg, and stomach, as well as a severely fractured skull. He was sent by rail to Aiken's Landing, VA on the James River where he was finally exchanged. From there he spent time in hospitals at Fortress Monroe, VA, Newport, RI, and for the longest term at Benton Barracks, MO. During this time, he was under constant medical attention for his injuries. Peter rejoined his company at Decatur, AL in December 1863. Later in 1863, on the march through GA, his injuries became so severe that he was forced by orders of his company captain to march in formation, and then switch to riding in an ambulance at intervals. In December of 1864 he was honorably discharged at camp near Savannah, GA.
