CARL SAMUEL DIETZEL - Private
|
CHRISTIAN CARL SAMUEL DIETZEL (son of Georg Heinrich) was born on November 26, 1838, and died on April 4, 1910. He was born in Reschwitz, Prussia and is buried at the Moniteau Evangelical Church in Moniteau County, Missouri. Carl immigrated with his parents at the age of seven to America. He settled with his parents in the Moniteau (Missouri) Evangelic neighborhood between Jamestown, Prairie Home, Cedron, and the church. The home where he grew up is located about four miles northwest of Jamestown, Missouri, and is still standing today.
Carl was pressed into military service the first time, in California, Missouri on July 28, 1862, with the 43rd Regiment of the Enrolled Missouri Militia CO E(Federal Unit) as a private in Company E under Captain Moser. He was ordered into service by General James Totten. (For more information on Totten, see excerpt on following page.) On May 29, 1863, Carl enlisted in Company G of the 1st Missouri State Militia Infantry (Federal Unit) in St. Louis, Missouri. He was 24 years old at the time. According to the enlistment papers, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, light haired, and blue eyed. Some of Carl's military records have his last name spelled 'Karl Deatzel'.
There is only one Civil War battle I could document that Carl was involved in. This Battle is known as The Battle of Pilot Knob and was fought in the town of Ironton, Missouri on September 26 & 27 1864. There is one book written on this battle it is 'Thunder in Arcadia Valley' by Bryce A. Suderow.

Organized at St. Louis, Mo., May 13, 1862, by consolidation of various Companies State Militia Infantry raised at St. Louis. Served as prison guard and Provost guard at St. Louis till September 28, 1862. Moved to Pilot Knob, Mo., and duty as bridge guard on Iron Mountain Railroad till September, 1863. (Cos. 'F' and 'I' at Patterson, Mo., till December, 1862; then return to St. Louis.) Ordered to St. Louis, Mo. September, 1863, and return to Pilot Knob, Mo., October 21, 1863. Duty at various points till October, 1864. Company 'E' at New Madrid, Mo.; Company 'D' at Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Company 'H' at Pilot Knob, Mo., and in line of Southwest branch Pacific Railroad and on Iron Mountain Railroad guarding bridges. Company 'H' at Defence of Pilot Knob and Fort Davidson September,27-28, 1864. Retreat to Rolla and duty there till October 24. Return to Pilot Knob and duty there till May, 1865. Mustered out May, 1865.
Regiment lost during service 14 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 52 Enlisted men by disease. Total 67.

Fred Hahn - Private
|
Fred Hahn was 19 when he mustered in Cape Girardeau's Company G, of the First Regiment of Engineers with the Missouri Volunteers on Sept 13, 1861. The engineers would build Cape Girardeau's encampments: Fort A on a bluff above the city on Bellevue Street; Fort B where Southeast Missouri State University's Academic Hall now stands; Fort C on Good Hope Street and Fort D off Ranney Avenue, which was manned with five cannon three 32-pounders and two 24-pound smooth-bore guns. Today it is maintained as a city park and history site.
When the Union Army occupied the town, the instructions were that if they saw any Confederate flags flying they would turns the guns on the town. Fred Hahn and his family immigrated to the United States in 1845, escaping the war-torn Prussian states for the presumed peace and prosperity promised in America. As the Civil War broke out, Fred Hahn's mother grew increasily anxious for her sons. But these hard-working people went when called, bound by loyalty to their new nation and a loating of slavery and wealthy plantation owners. Fred serve three years, building and rebuilding rail lines, bridges, canals and fortifications into the deep South. His oldest brother died as a result of injuries sustained in the war.
