Calvin was born 22 Sep 1831 in Caswell County, North Carolina. He enlists on 28 April 1862 at Canton Mississippi in Capt. George Ward's Co of Light Artillery. [J.R. Davis Legion]. In May of 1863 the battery is assigned to Poague's Artillery Battalion, Pender's Division, 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. In July 1 -3 engaged at Gettysburg. Brisco Station, and Mile Run Campaign. In 1864 the battery is equipped with 4 12-pound Napoleons. It reported 127 men and 59 horses. May 5 - 6 Battle of the Wilderness, Capt. Ward is promoted to Major. Lieut. Thomas J Richard's takes command of the battery. Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, May 23 - 26th Mayor Ward is killed by cannon shot while temporarily taking command of the battalion. 1 - 3 June 1864 in the Battle of Cold Harbor. The battery was commanded by Lieut. Yeargain. it was posted in a position that exposed it to heavy skirmisher fire and suffered heavy casualties. At the siege of Petersburg, the battery was down to 36 men and had two 8 in mortars. 8 April 1865 The battery was captured with most of Lee's reserve artillery by Custer's Cavalry. No member of the battery was present at the surrender. Calvin died 18 Jun 1907 in Madison County, Miss. he is buried in that place in the Camden, Cemetery. We are related by a distant marriage.
