Dennis Huntley Jr. My 2nd great grandfather. Dennis Huntley Jr. was born July 3, 1842, in Vermont. Father Dennis Huntley Sr., mother Lydia Cole Hartwell. Served from 1862 to 1865 in Company C, 7th Minnesots Vol. Infantry, Pension Certificate 859,070. Widow's Pension Certificate 912,843. A civil war daily pocket diary kept by Dennis Huntley Jr. for the year 1865 is in my possession which begins with the Regiment's move to Clifton, TN, and then to Eastport, MS, on the steamboat Iyeta headed for New Orleans. There are entries for the Siege of Spanish Fort, the capture of Fort Blakely, the constant sound of cannons, and rumours of President Lincoln's assassination, which were later confirmed to the men as true. The men were mostly left to their own devices to find their way home from Selma, Alabama, back to Ft. Snelling, to be mustered out August 16, 1865. He describes the people of St. Paul lined up along the street and cheering the men who made it back home as they passed to the Fort.
