George Knighton - Private
Enlisted January 27, 1864 and served with the other surviving members of the 56th until they were mustered out in July 1865. Regarding the Battle of the Wilderness, George Knighton told his daughter that 'when night came they lay on the ground with a large fallen tree at their head to protect them from the wind. Near daybreak someone shouted for the men not to move, a shot was fired and a large poisonous snake slithered off the log above their heads.' George also told his daughter that 'often the men didn't have enough to eat and the only medical help they had was what they gave each other.'
