John W. Gilmore - Private
“North Brookfield. – The funeral of John W. Gilmore, a private in company B, of the Massachusetts twenty-seventh regiment, who died at the hospital at Newbern, N.C., on the 18th inst. [April], was observed in the meeting house of the first congregational society in North Brookfield [MA], on the 24th inst. [April]. The body of the deceased had been carefully wrapped in bandages soaked with tar, by his comrades in the army, and was so preserved as to be recognized by his family and friends. He was the son of Mr. George A. Gilmore, 22 years of age, and a young man of exemplary morals, and much respected. Nearly a thousand people assembled at his funeral. Fellow soldiers, mostly members of the Massachusetts fifteenth, who were taken prisoners at Ball’s Bluff, and had been released on parole, were present as an escort, and bestowed military honors upon the dead at the grave. Many a tear was shed, not only in sympathy with the mourners, but also in anxious solicitude for friends now in the ranks of the army.”
