He joined early in the war, and was sent to Baltimore with his brother for garrison duty, to help prevent riots. His brother died there in 64. But he was placed in a DC hospital in early 63, probably Harwood in Ft. Dupont DC. Dismissed fall of 63. Rejoined the garrison troops guarding DC. Dismissed at the end of the war, but suffered infection that eventually caused his death in Oct. 1870.

Thomas W. Leggett was also in the 4th Potomac Home Brigade of the Maryland Infantry; Company C; rank of Private. (The 4th P.H.B. Md. Inf. guarded the Baltimore Ohio Railroad between Martinsburg and Harper's Ferry, West Virginia until Aug. 1862 - consolidated with 3rd Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade Infantry, Aug. 11, 1862).

William Shaffer - Private
Pvt. William Shaffer, a carpenter in the C&O boat yards of Cumberland, enlisted in the 3rd Maryland Regiment Potomac Home Infantry Brigade [USA] at Cumberland, Maryland in March of 1862 and served in Company ‘H’ throughout the war. He was discharged at Baltimore in May 1865. He saw action at Harpers Ferry, Battle of Monocacy, Snickers Gap, Bolivar Hights, Hallton, Charlestown and Berryville.
William Shaffer was born in Lindheim, H-D, Germany on 24 Aug 1842 and migrated to Cumberland, Maryland in 1846. He married Sophia E. Schultz in Cumberland in 1867. He was an inspector on the B&O RR and died in Cumberland in 1932.
