John was born 31 Mar 1840 in Cambridge, Maryland. He was offered a Lieutenant's. position in the Federal Army, he refused and went to Richmond and enlisted with the Confederacy in Co A 2nd Maryland Infantry. on 15 Sept 1862 / another source gives his date of enlistment as 19 March 1863. He was wounded at the battle of Weldon Railroad and again 1 April 1865 near Petersburg. He was captured at Farmville Va. 1 April 1865.

Enlisted on September 15 1862. He was captured April 2, 1865 at Hatchers Run. April 4,1865 he was imprisoned at Point Lookout until his release June 20, 1865. He returned to his home town of Cambridge, Maryland where he remained until his death in 1921. He is buried at Green Lawn Cemetery in Cambridge.
