James Vincent Rank Unknown |
My great, great grandfather's name was James Vincent O'Connor. He was from Brockton, MA. He tried to join the MA volunteers but was too young. He ran away to Maine and joined the 31st Maine under the name 'James Vincent'. A genealogic researcher discovered this when we tried to get him a replacement headstone and could not find his records. He was wounded, we thought at Richmond, and evacuated to Washington. He applied for disability later but could not get it because of the name change. The Civil War Vet's organization did get him his original headstone when they researched his records.

Edwin Searle Rogers - 2nd Lieutenant |
Mustered March 12th 1864. Participated in the Battle of the Wilderness and all following engagements of the Army of the Patomac, including Cold Harbor. Although commissioned a lieutenant, Edwin had command of his company during all of that time. Edwin was mortally wounded and taken prisoner, most likely just northeast of Fletcher's Redoubt, to confederate Barton’s brigade field hospital. He died June 7th.
9 years later his father, Dr. Luther Rogers, received a letter from a man who's son was a southern surgeon. The surgeon had treated Edwin in the field hospital and noticed a fraternity pin on his uniform. The surgeon was a member of the same fraternity (DKE) and did everything he could to care for his fraternity brother. With the letter was included a lock of Edwin's hair and the fraternity pin.
Edwin's grave is at the Cold Harbor cemetery, Cold Harbor, Hanover County, Virginia, USA, plot 812.
There is also a memorial inscription for Edwin on the back of his mother's grave stone on the Patten Cemetery, Patten Maine.
